X50Mix- Skinned equalizer to change the global audio settings on the Axim X50 series.
1/29/05:
http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~jmisurda/ppc/x50mix.htm v0.09: This is the base install for both models (either QVGA or VGA). Download and install this first, regardless of which model you are using.
http://leggnet.com/emulamer/ v0.10 X50Mix.10.zip: If you have a QVGA X50 (mid or low), you need to download this, unzip it, and overwrite the X50Mix.exe on your X50. You need to install v0.09 prior to doing this.
If you have an X50v, just download 0.09 and install, since 0.10 adds nothing but QVGA support.
12/14/04:
X50Mix.exe is now an installer, you need to run it from the PC instead of copying it over to the PDA
There is a zip of the cabs in the /cab/ folder if you'd rather not run the installer, and the source is in /source/

I was digging around in the registry the other day looking for something unrelated and found some settings for the hardware EQ on the sound chip (HKCU\ControlPanel\AudioAdvContrl). Changing the settings and doing a soft reset changes the sound, so I wonder if Dell will be releasing an audio control panel at some point?
Anyways, I made a quick little app that changes the settings with sliders and does the soft reset for you. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to figure out how to do it without the soft reset or Dell will release a mixer, but this is at least better than going in with a registry editor :)
I do not know if the X50 mid or low have this sound chip, so I don't know if it will work on those or not.
Edit: just thought I'd add that just with bass and treble up some (superbass seems to add more distortion than bass) it sounds, by far, better than any other PDA I've ever listened to and better than most MP3 players.
Since it's sticky now, figured I should mention that you don't have to soft reset anymore.
omg, now i have no reason to miss my h2215's equalizer now :) thanksa!
Same with my A716. This coupled with Betaplayer's equalization produces the best sounding music/movies I've ever heard in something so small. All I need now is the VGA cable and I've literally got a portable home theater system. :jd:
I tried it through WithMP3 with flat equalization X50mix bass to the max and X50mx 3D half way up and it was sweet, opened up the sound a lot.
We've got to find you an icon for your app though. Maybe a contest?

40iPlay has this (since the .444 version), but no need to do a reset. Matter of fact, it's controlled in real time directly from the EQ panel. In the attached pic, the two (too?) tiny arrows to the left and right of the bass and treble sliders are additional sliders that control the hardware bass and treble boost. Works for iPAQs (most, not all), as well.

Does this affect all audio though? or just audio with in the program?
or am I way off here?

None of the sliders seem to affect anything outside of the program. I tried running WMP in the background and messing with the siders and nothing changed. I'm sure you can't answer since you're selling it, but how do you go about accessing the hardware mixer on the ipaq? Is there some sort of windows API that can do it?
The X50v's sound chip doesn't use the CPUs AC97 interface, and uses I2S instead. That basically means that I have no clue which GPIO pins are used for the control interface, so I can't even attempt to change it manually. There are also no mixer devices present on the system from what I can find, so that's out. The only thing I haven't tried that I know about is using the functions in wavedev.dll, and I'm not sure if that would work or not. Dell does it somehow, I'm just not sure how.
All the program does is make it easier to change the registry settings. Unfortunatly, I haven't yet found a way to physically change the settings on the sound chip. It's definitly possible, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I assume you simply copy the file over to the windows folder and then execute on the Axim?
The iplay demo you may have downloaded dates to October. .444 is a recent, regular version. Sure, the hardware EQ is affected.
Any EQ you hear in the demo is by way of DSP code. This is high-quality DSP code, but it's not hardware EQ. It's nothing at all like your typical mp3 player EQ (and I use that term loosely in that case, because those 'EQs' tend to be more of a distortion source than anything else).
Here's a NEW pick, with now-bigger little knobs to play with (those knobs are what control the hardware EQ levels -- if you don't see the knobs, you don't have hardware control available).
The knobs (triangles) I speak of have the red arrows pointing at them in the picture below. They are like regular sliders, so you can move them up or down to control the hardware EQ on 36-3800,2200,4100,4300 iPAQs (5500 also I believe), and the X50 (all).

Edit: if you're using mixerWhatever (I don't even really know if that's what it's for, but it's the only API I could see that had anything at all to do with mixers), mixerNumDevs returns 0 on the X50v when I tried it.
