The contrast hack worked on my old Viewsonic V35 Pocket PC 2002 device so it's nothing that is "new" or "about to be released". I found that over time I just didn't use it as it didn't reset itself after a reboot as people are finding here with the x50v.
That database thingy sounds pretty cool. I got to play with that one.
Night,
-tom

Nice find, but I'd rather wait until it's fully implemented in a coming ROM update. Being that the contrast setting isn't saved, and that the slider seems to give you weird results (probably why they didn't put it in the control panel in the first place, it's obviously incomplete).
Best Regards,
Christopher H.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Menus\CoolNewMenu does something interesting to the "Menu" control panel when it is set to "1". I haven't quite figured it out, but it looks like it lets you hide some of the entries in teh "New" menu on the home screen.

Does it allow you to adjust contrast to make the screen "as good as" the 4700 and save settings?

The Contrast Applet causes my X50v to crash. It's also really slow to repond when it doesnt crash.

And when I renamed this Redirect to Redirect_ and after softreset the MS Backlight control panel showed up. Unfortunately without tab with sliders to set the backlight.
So if they will be there, maybe we should set the right contrast and backlight to make colors "sharper" and move the X50v to first place with quality of display (Hx4700 is really beating X50v on display colors... Compared using PocketLCD app.)
Another thing is if you start the Contrast panel again, it doesn't remember the position of slider...:bang:
BTW lot's of panels are "redirected" this way to nothing. Anybody knows why they are "redirected"?

1- This trick only works in Toshiba e740s and now in the Dell x50
2- This trick was included in Tweaks2k2 around a 1 1/2 year ago and recently was modified so it can be used in Dell x50, so, You can use the latest version of Tweaks2k2 to apply this trick.
3- There are other "Redirect" in registry section. Why? Ok, there are two reason: The default applet does not work (like this one in other PPCs, or because the OEM has replaced the default applet by one that looks better, works different or works better.

It seems that it can't work on my Dell X50(416Mhz and Chinese WM2003 SE). I can see the contrast icon but I can't adjust the contrast. Could you tell me the reason? Thanks

It seems that the contrast control applet is not working on X50(416Mhz and Chinese OS WM2003 SE). I can see the contrast icon, but I can't move the slider on the bar. Someone can help me? Thanks!

Then soft reset and go to start > settings > system > contrast and adjust the contrast. The only thing is, it doesn't remember the contrast after a soft reset. This should help with reading in the dark -- the screen brightness is too bright when you are in the dark.
I peered around for a hidden mixer applet too, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Could someone please describe in simple terms how to access the registry? I have looked everywhere, searched for files called 'registry' and can not find anything. Are they hidden? A little help for a novice computer guy please.

You need a Registry Editor. Resco File Explorer ( http://www.resco-net.com/explorer.asp) comes with a registry editor but you have to buy the software. It is very good.
PHM Registry Editor ( http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/) is also good and free. However if you don't know how to find the registry and/or what it is and does, I would be vary wary of altering things. You could possibly render yor machine useless. Maybe do a bit of reading on Google, search for Windows registry.
