infrared beaming

I just got the x50v and am trying to beam to my old x5. I get a screen after tapping on the item I want to send I get the screen that says Infrared and beside that it says Align ports. I select a device and it goes to pending, after a few minutes I get a Failed. Thanks for any help

Have you set the other unit to receive an incoming beam? You can do this full-time with an option in Settings | Connections | Beam, or use the 'irsquirt' utility. I prefer TotalCommanderCE for files, as it's faster, but the native IR app should work.

I tried to do an IR transfer (contact and meeting) from my X30 with another X5. But it failed in 1 direction. When X30 sends the info, X5 can pick it up, but vice-versa is not true. I read some documentation where it talks about incompatibility. I will try to search for the link and will post it if I find it.

I was able to send and receive via IR between two X30s (1 was mid and the other was high)

I've always found PPC IR beaming to be flakey... I've given up on it as a reliable method for sharing data.

I tried this method with limited success, If you are trying to send big files dont bother, its good for sending Address cards, notes and small files.

Apparently there can be database incompatibity issues. I am still unclear on when these arise. When I upgraded my X5 to WM2003, my options for Contact/Calendar transfer were extremely limited, as Activesync will not allow me to put any of the PIM databases into my PC. Been trying for years, lots of tricks, but nothing works.

So I used Sprite Backup. I also made a Phatwate dbExplorer backup before the upgrade, but this proved unnecessary. Sprite restored to the 'new' device just fine. The 'upgrade mode' tool within Sprite didn't work, but apparently it wasn't needed, as Contacts and Calendar items restored well and work well.
