SE_vga is free as well. Its a non-expiring 'Trial' and is under the "Freeware" section on PocketGear.

Why do these devices that support true VGA mode come without software to access that mode?

Because Windows Mobile 2003se was basically a hack to addon VGA support through upscaling not true VGA. Initially it was expected that 2005 would be ready to ship long before the new hardware accelerated vga devices were out...since that didnt happen, we got stuck with 2003se :)

So once 2005 (or some other later version of Windows Mobile is available), can we upgrade? Being new to PPCs, I'm wondering whether upgrading the OS is as easy as on PCs, or doable at all.

No one can really say for sure...but each generation of pocket pc's has had at least a few models that were upgraded and if I was a betting man, based on the specifications, that the x50v and the 4700 will be the ones to ge one.

Oz_VGA in my opinion. It alows you to change system font sizes at the same time plus a few other features that take a little learning.

I prefer OZvga myself...it has a smaller footprint and is more configurable.

I agree. With your PI and ozvga settings, I've been using true vga for about 2 weeks. I love it.
