Going Online while Out and About
I just bought a axim x50v and should receive it this afternoon. I'm new to all this, and am the first to admit that I don't know much about pda's.
I understand about bluetooth being a (wireless)technology which lets different devices communicate together. :approve:
My question was about how to go online with the axim. I was told that I can go online where there are "hotspots" like in some coffeeshops, airports, and so on.
Also through my broadband connection with a wireless router I heard (bluetooth again, I guess).
That is all good, but what do I do if I want to go online without being in an airport or college? Let's say I sit in my car some parking lot or waiting in line while shopping - Is there a way to go online then?
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

Wi-fi is what you will use to connect to a "hotspot" in an airport or your wireless router at home, not bluetooth. Bluetooth comes in when you are away from a "hotspot" and requires a bluetooth enabled cellphone. You can then use bluetooth to connect to the cellphone and use the cellphone basically as a modem to connect to the internet. You will also need a data plan for your bluetooth enabled cell phone in most cases which costs extra.

Bluetooth can be used for other things such as keyboards, mice, and headphones as well.

If your cell phone carrier has BT phones then you can use them, as has been mentioned above.
If your carrier doesn't have BT phones (like the CDMA carriers) you can buy a CDMA/1X PCMCIA card like the Sierra Wireless 555 Aircard and connect it to your Axim via an adaptor, and connect to the 1X data network that way. Again, a data plan from your carrier would be required.
That's how I'm posting this right now. I'm sitting on the bus on the way home from work !!

I presume you have to have a bluetooth dongle attached to the PC? I'm on Windows XP - is that what I need?

Wow, you are doing exactly what I'm trying to get to! :not_worth
Unfortunately I just bought a new cellphone, the motorola v220, and it does have internet, but I dont think it has bluetooth. Oh boy... :rolling:
Maybe I can get another one later on, and give this one to my husband, LOL.
But for now I'm interested in getting one of the cards you mentioned (CDMA/1X PCMCIA card like the Sierra Wireless 555 Aircard).
I saw some cards on Ebay for a very cheap price. They have a sierra wireless card, but it's 300 instead of 555. Would that work? And who would I call for the internet service for it? I heard companies like sprint have their own wireless cards for pda's.
Sorry for all the questions...LOL, I notice it's like I have no idea what I got myself into. LOL.
But I'll do my best. :approve:

Oh, that makes sense...
Too bad that I just got a new cellphone, which does connect to the internet, but doesn't have bluetooth - I think. (Motorola V220)
Next phone will definately have bluetooth - or whatever they will come up next, LOL. :)

I definately need to get at least a keyboard later on...Any ideas on affordable ones, or do I have to order them from Dell?

I personally like ThinkOutside (I have the Bluetooth Keyboard) www.thinkoutside.com. Dell also came out with keyboards and I hear Targus is just as good.

I have the thinkoutside and it's great. I like it better than having a connector-based keybaord since I can type with the PDA in landscape. Plus, the keyboard won't be "obsolete" if I upgrade down the line to a different brand or model pocket pc.

Not just BT<->Cellphone
BlueTooth isn't the only way to access the internet over your PDA using your cellphone. You can connect them using cables. Check out www.Gomadic.com.
I'm gonna order a Gomadic cable so I can connect my Kyocera Slider SE47 Verizon cell phone with my Axim x50v (ordered last night) and my laptop. :approve:

No, the Aircard 300 won't work. Firstly, if operates on a different data network (CDPD) which is old and being taken down in some area's. Also, it won't run on the 3.3 volts supplied by the CF slot (I tried it already).
You need a new Aircard like the 555 which doesn't require as much power. Maybe check with your provider to see if they have a good price on them if you sign up on a new data contract.
Sprint does have their own cards so you could check them out. Be sure to check out their 1X network coverage.

If you don't have a Bluetooth phone, you can still get on the web using a Gomadic cable twix your exsisting phone (in most cases) and your Axim. See www.gomadic.com, they're reasonable in cost, easy to setup and work well.
