Charging question and Shutdown Question

I am going crazy trying to figure out what is going on with my x50. I received it last Thursday and i have been playing with it non stop. My thing is this. When i take it off the cradle and it is still off, the battery should not be in use at all right? or am i wrong? when i place it back on the cradle (still havent turned it on) the light is amber which means it is charging again. I am wondering if I am not shutting it down right and the screen is just black and i dont know that its not shutoff or there might be something else going on. i have read the book and read that if you hold it down the screen will dim. It also says to press it and release and it will turn off. so am i doing it right???

Yes you are doing it right. First, the RAM is volitile memory which means if power is totally cut off it will lose its contents. So the PDA has to constantly power the ram. Second, it still thinks a little bit when its turned off so it can do things like alarms and have no boot time when you hit the power button. Its really nothing to worry about unless you plan on leaving the thing off for weeks with out connecting it to a power supply and the drain is really small.

As stated above, PPCs always consume some power and enter a deep sleep when off. Things like clock & alarm maintenance occur in this state. Also, your PPC will wake each midnight to perform some housekeeping. If you leave your wireless on, it with try to connect and drain power until it times out. Turn off your wireless and stop and/or close the media player before shutting down for the night. Also, don't let your PPC sit longer than a week or so without charging or you might find your battery completely drained.

Are there any settings we can change to minimize PPC activity when it is turned off (besides the ones already mentioned)?

I've seen this suggestion on Aximsite:

Go to Settings -> Connections -> Beam, turn off "Receive all incoming beams" if IR is not somthing you typically use.

Also, pretty much any battery operated device will go into a charge mode for at least a few seconds everytime you connect it to power.

Thanks to all who have posted on here. I really like my axim and i am glad that i have found this site. i am learning more and more with it. i am mainly using it for keeping up with my mileage, schedule, calendar.....and so on. i am very happy excel is on there so i have already made a spreadsheat for mileage and expenses for the school i work for so i am happy. one thing i hate about it and i think microsoft needs to fix is (and im sure yall know) but the media player keeps playing when closed. when i first did it i was like what the heck is going on with this dang thing and then i figured out that it has to be manually stopped instead of closing. which sucks. anyway later on
