I'm close to getting my first pocket pc, thinking about the x50v. I'm a bit confused about three of the four types of storage in the tech specs.
64MB SDRAM- that one seems clear
128MB strata flash ROM- is that storage which can be rewritten via downloading from the main PC? Are OS, applications and data bases stored there? Is that fast memory when reading or slow?
Then there seems to be two expansion slots-
One fore Compact Flash cards and the other for "Secure Digital" cards? I gather compact flash is relatively slow reading back, kind of like a CD drive, and that the slot is often used for connecting other gadgets to the pocket pc. Is that correct?
What's Secure Digital? In particular, is it a lot faster than compact flash and is it a good place to store large amounts of application data that might be needed quickly? Does the slot have other applications than storage?
Your Main Memory (64 MB SDRAM) is divided into 2 components, Storage and Programs. Storage is like hard drive space, program is like RAM on a PC.
Regarding the ROM, whatever the Windows Mobile 2003 SE files don't occupy will be made availible as a Built-in Storage folder. I'd say you'd have appx. 96 MB availible in the BIS folder, where you can store files and install programs.
Then you can use either CF or SD cards, or both. I use SD because I don't have a CF card slot on my X3i. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so do a search on these 2 types of cards for more information. CF is cheaper & has higher capacity cards, and I believe SD is faster. Again, you can store data and install apps to SD/CF cards.
SD is faster but only in the techy sense. In real life for PDA users the difference is so miniscule you'd never notice.
Digital Camera users are probably the only people who need those really fast cards. Their devices write to them constantly so write speed becomes an issue. Pocket PCs spend more time reading the cards and you may have noticed none of the card manufacturers emphasive read speed.

Yeah...but...Im now a little confused... If you installed a program into built-in storage....Hard reset would remove it?

No if it is in BIS it will stay. This is where I put Sprite Backup to be able to use it right away to restore if I do a hard reset. BTW Welcome to aximsite

What about the icon to the link Frenchy? Is it still in the Programs folder or do you have to navigate to the .exe file after a hard reset?

Because I know the path of the .EXE file I start the program by browsing to it and then restore. I could create a LNK file there too but didn't bother with this yet. You were correct on your second statement.

@Swim100flyy-The programs are still there but you have to use file explore to start them by cicking on the .exe file of the program you want to use in BIS. Frechy's method of starting his backup program is the key. If you keep a current backup on a storage card all you have to do is start it and restore instead of recreating all the .lnks from the .exe files in BIS.
Is this helping you at all l_suter?
