"My Documents" Location

I was browsing through the registry on my Axim the other day and stumbled on the key for the location of "My Documents". I am VERY tempted to change this to a folder on my SD card, or built-in-storage because I've been trying to keep the main memory clear for applications. Does anyone believe there would be any side effects of this, other then a slight slow down? I already install everything possable into locations other then main memory and don't mind the cost speedwise. Has anyone else tried a hack like this yet, and could share thier experiences?

I have a My Documents folder on my SD card, but I didn't delete the Main Memory folder. I just keep everything in the SD My Docs folder.

You should have a My Documents folder in every memory location. If you don't, the system will create a zero length "ignore_my_docs" file to signal the absence of the folder. That signal will then cause the operating system to search EVERY folder EVERY time you open the card, significantly slowing it down.

The problem i'm trying to get around is that some apps write out config files or other files to My Documents without promts or configuration to stop them. Other dialogs on teh system only allow you to save to "My Documents", which always saves the file to the My Documents directory in main memory, they give no way to browse and save to other locations.

I'm just trying to find out if there would be any side effects of forcing it out to the SD card. I'm also a little curious abou what happens with my above hack if the SD card is removed.

If you feel brave, try it out and see what happens. OF COURSE, backup everything since you may have to restore from a hard reset.

I know that some desktop microsoft apps get tempermental if you move things around from locations created from the initial install.

I like to ask a similar sort of question, too. The free memories in my Storage Memory and my Program Memory are quite low, 11.5 MB and 5.9 MB respectively. How can I free up more memory there? I am thinking of moving my PIM data to my SD card but I can't find the folder which contains my PIM data.

You can't move the PIM data, that's one of the system locations you can't change. Look for temp files and if you use PIE, look for the various webpages it has cached. Memmaid will help clean up memory for you.

Maybe this is my problem. I loaded 2 calculators to try, one using embedded visual basic, which I also added. In addition, I added Merck Medicus programs which are synced each time (onto SD) and moved Epocrates (which also autoupdates) to default memory. Now when I open Epocrates, I get a windows icon spinning for a couple seconds. And I'm having trouble syncing, which is a new problem. My only large files, at the moment, are photos and music, all on the SD.

1. Any suggestions?
2. If a 'My docs' folder in main, BIS, and SD would help, can you link me to a how-to? Thanks.

I have that "ignore_my_docs" file on my CF card. Do I just need to make a folder called "My Documents" on the CF to speed things up?

Yes. Use Activesync/Explore to open the window, then make the directory on the card and delete the "ignore" file.

Naive question/idea, and this is from someone with a unix based background (aliases, and soft-links)... if you removed the MyDocuments folder from the RAM, and copied a Shortcut to a MD folder on your SD card back to the RAM... would that effectively cause it all to be sent to the SD card (not sure how much shortcuts immitate unix soft-links).

The problem i have is that Active Sync will sync my data to only the main memory for all notes/excel/files...

I also tried copying the My Documents folder to Built In Storage, since we DO have 128 MB of it compared to whats left in main RAM.... but alas, i cannot get it to synce with that Built In Storage version of My Docs....

How could they leave us hanging like this?

Anyone know how to make MyDocuments be used off a CF/SD card instead of into RAM? I would like to make new notes, excel sheets, and msword documents and such but not save them into RAM automatically. Instead I want to send them to a MyDocuments folder on my CF or SD cards. Is there a way to do that? Would it require a registry hack?

TIA

ActiveSync will only sync the RAM My Documents. However, there are solutions out there that will sync with cards. I use MightSync (http://www.mydocsunlimited.com/html/mightysync.html) to sync larger stuff to CF & SD Cards.
