the 4700 is a total ripoff...the dell is so much sleeker, i had the 4700 first, and then returned it...i used to have a 2215, but i love the x50v so much better
I liked the price, the styling and the VGA screen. HP messed up the iPaq line AFAIC, They should have kept the Compaq iPaq design team IMHO.

Former Ipaq user (4150) and DID have the 4700 for one day and returned it....why? I could not live with myself spending $649.00 plus tax only knowing that I could have used the money to buy a notebook computer. The 4700 is a nice piece of machine but for $425.00 I decided to buy the X50v because it has what the 4700 except the 4700 has a slight better display. And last but least...when HP decided not to give it's current owners of the Ipaq 4150 the choice of upgrading to 2003SE...that's when I made the decision NEVER again to buy an Ipaq.....

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dell handled it even worse. No upgrade for X3i users either. At least HP went and gave us a few ROM upgrades for WPA etc..
I would not expect dissimilar treatment from Dell. But at least they're cheaper :)

I tried a 4700 out for a week, and hated it. One of the strengths of a pda for me is its mobility, and the 4700 is just so big; if I put it in my suit pocket it looked like I was deformed or something!
I also personally thought that the x50v screen, whilst not so "colour-rich", is actually more viewable, especially when working under dim artificial light.

Yep. I'm a former iPaq-only man. I've had a 36xx, 38xx, 39xx, 4155 (which I still have), and a 55xx series. Of them all, I still believe the 4155 has the best form factor, but HP lost me with the price and design of the 47xx! I bought an x30h from Dell and loved the performance (but not the boxy design). When the x50v came along the form, performance, and pricing (all the issues HP missed) made the x50v an easy choice!
My last PPC was the HP5555. I really liked it and miss the fingerprint reader. But the x50v is great. I'm glad that I decided to switch to Dell. I really miss the 128 memory, but since my 5555 quit, I needed one right away and the Dell seemed the best of the available at the time.
I'm using my 4700 right now but I ordered an x50v yesterday. The statement says it'll ship on 2/9 - I sure hope it's sooner than that!
I have no serious complaints with my 4700 (got it in late September), but I've read enough comparisons to make me suspect that the x50v is better, and that I'll likely wind up selling my 4700.
