Desktop icons without Pocket Plus

I am currently using SPB plus on my axim. I use it because I like the friggin x to close a program instead of just minimizing it and because I like having icons on my today screen instead of having to open explorer or programs to get to it.

However, I don't really like the way SPB makes my system feel a bit laggy and how it takes my ram. I really just wish Microsoft would model their windows CE after their desktop version instead of making us buy extra programs to achieve the same effect.

Anyway my question is: is there a way to get those 2 things. X's closing programs and some icons on the today screen without a 3rd party program? Have you worked around some of the laggy feel of the x50? I mean we have 624 horses with a bunch of ram and a sepatate 2700g chip.... we should be flying or at least matching old ppc speed with significantly less battery.
