ugh.. been trying to update the rom for 2 hours now but it keeps erroring out. I run the update program, and I am going through the update rom pathing. It successfully backs up my rom, and tries to update my rom. My axim screen turns white and says it is performing a handshake with my pc. A few minutes later, the update program says that it could not update because my axim is not connected to a device, sync and try again. The program ends, and my axim is stuck in the handshake screen. I had to reset the axim, and it basically experienced a hard reset but still the original rom.
Dell technical support. I was on the phone for an hour and I knew I was in trouble when I first got someone and they told me not to update my rom because the rom on dell's site is the same as the one on my device.. The same ? I explained to him that my rom is a01 and the new one is a02 and told him I truly want the updates offered in this new rom. He still said it was the same, and I repeated this one was just released and updates sensitivity and graphics so I want to install it. He had me disconnect the axim and started going through the script of how to troubleshoot syncing. Ugh.
Someone must have told him there was a rom update, and he asked what file I was running. I told him the r2**blahblah was what I downloaded and it installs the update application on my machine. He tells me to run the r2 program again.. umm ok guess he knows best, so I run it.. He says ok did it freeze again...
ARRGGHH I repeat what i told him 2 times already, the r2 installs the rom onto my computer and when I run that program, I tell it to update my rom and it fully backs up the old rom but freezes blah blah...like I said before.. then he tells me to go to my start button.. ok then settings ok.. then systems.. huh then he said oh I mean do this on your axim and what is the rom on the device...ugh
well after a few more times repeating that the r2 program does not actually do the update it installs the program-we got nothing done. He just said he was going to talk to upper management and call me back in a few hours.. Damn it, its 6:00am and I haven't gone to bed yet, so I told him to call back at 1 tomorrow... so that will be a dumb wake up call from india
Frustration huh??? have you tried just backing up to an SD card, ONLY the important files... then do the update without worrying about ROM BACKUP... and then try and install everything from scratch...
...god I hope mine goes smoothly... I'm doing it in a few hours!

And are you using Xp or 2000? Have you tried disabling firewalls/antivirus, etc.?
**Closes out the program to update new version and walks slowly away from the PC**
So here's my question if your AXIM is runing a01 and the new update is a02 one would think that it doesnt take a computer wiz to figure out that there not the same update. Why wouldnt Dell put out info on who should update an who shouldnt bother>>?

Hi-
I feel your pain. I too had a similar problem but not with the x50v. Instead of pounding sand, I tried the upgrade on a different PC and it worked.
I don't try to solve the mysteries of Windows anymore.
brian
Running on Win Xp. Cradle is connected directly to the pc. No others apps running on the pc-turned off virus protection etc. I do not run a firewall on my pc leave protection up with the router firewall etc. I have tried skipping it making a backup and just directly do the update, same problem of it locking up at handshake phase. Just running old usb ports, pc doesn't have 2.0
Did you make sure you downloaded the correct update? There are 2. Also, can't tell if you already stated, but you did do a hard reset? Try unplugging all other USB devices.

dont restore your backup because new functions can be disabled, install everything from scratch, it says clearly on dells site!
did anyone find out how to make the rom update actually work if you get the usb connection not found error? dell sent me a link for a guide and it was just an x5 guide that was posted a few years back on this site-those dumb asses [find a solution not just misguided advise]
