Is Built-in Storage faster than Main Memory storage?

I usually install all my applications in Built-in Storage on my x50v rather than Main Memory storage to maximize the amount of program memory available. I noticed that in doing so, some applications that read and write to a database file stored in Built-in Storage run noticable slower.

Can anyone confirm that accessing data in Built-in Storage is slower than Main Memory storage? Also, I have the new ROM update installed.

Thanks.

What kind of apps?

You shouldn't be putting things that constantly access databases in BIS (ie; Today Plugins).

BIS is much slower than main memory and slower than CF/SD card storage. BIS is the slowest memory. You should keep only non-volatile things in BIS, as MrK suggested.

Thanks for the clarification. There is so much room in Builtin Storage, which made it a very attractive place to store program files. I pretty much moved all my apps to that location (except for Today Screen plugins). I'll have to look into moving my apps to my SD card, and maybe reserve the Builtin Storage for backup files.

There's a few items I like to place in BIS... programs that contain secure data (eWallet), infrequently used utilities, and calculators.

I moved most programs to my SD card, but now I'm moving back some of the programs to BIS that are mapped to buttons.

After changing my power on settings to turn on the device with a button press, I noticed that (button mapped) programs on the SD card gives me an error message "cannot find program name or one of its components" when the button is used to wake the PDA. Programs located on the CF did not seem to exhibit this problem.

Is it really significantly slower than the memory cards? Woops, I install all of my programs to BIS.

What ROM update are you referring to? I wasn't aware that there was one. :rolling: Where can we get it?

Built in storage is the slowest place you can write to. Main memory is fastest. CF/Microdrive on average are faster than SD drives. At least that's my experiance.

So if the application needs to write a lot of data out, you shouldn't use BIS.

I have always heard that the Bus speed of the SD I/O is faster than the CF read/write. The other factor would be the rated speed of your card.

The only apps that I've installed to my BIS are SPB Finance (security purposes), Wisbar, and WeatherPanel. I had WeatherPanel on an SD card at first, then I remembered that SD cards aren't bootable, so anything that runs after soft reset shouldn't go on an SD card. As for WeatherPanel, it runs just fine from my BIS. SPB PocketPlus on the other hand, WILL NOT run from anything aside from main memory.

EDIT: I just noticed that I also have Stuntcar Extreme installed on my BIS, but I know that I told it to install to my SD card. Anyone have any idea why it didn't install there?

Could this be why my battery dies so quick? I have everything in the BIS. Do you think it is draining my battery faster?
