Confusion regarding Read & Write Speed of BIS, SD and CF card

Confusion regardiong read & write speed of BIS, SD and CF card continues. Part of the reason could be from various hardware and software configurations.

Here is my personal Experience with the read and write speed of the different storage.

I copied the Matrix Reloaded trailer (29.9 MB 640X480) and pasted it in different storage (using Resco File Explorer) and then played in BetaPlayer (Ver. stable 0.5).

Setup:

The hardwares I have used are in my signature.
I have my Axim in true/real VGA mode.
Main Memory(Free) configuration was - storage 9.07MB and program 19.52 MB

Copying (Write)Time:

BIS = slightly over 3 minutes

CF Card = about 45 secs

SD card = about 35 secs

Read Time (BetaPlayer Benchmark)

BIS : 176.00% Data Rate: 2.9 Mbit/sec

CF Card: 148.34% Data Rate: 2.4 Mbit/sec

SD card: 176.91% Data Rate: 2.9 Mbit/sec

It's easy to test and post only your findings here and help clarify this issue.

Thanks

Thanks for posting this. It should at least put the BIS question to rest.

Very interesting - I'm very surprised to see that the built-in storage is so much slower...cheap memory I guess.

I have a question about your statement that your Axim is in true/real VGA mode - is that configurable? I have the x50v and I can't find a setting anywhere for that.

Thanks.

EDIT: Nevermind - found out I needed an external program to do that. I'm trying out SE_VGA now.

I'd hardly call BIS slow. It may take a little longer to write, but it's every bit as fast as a premium SD card when reading, which is what's relevant for most programs. And I wouldn't call it cheap, either--it's built in to the PXA270 processor that drives the Axim.

Indeed, that's my obsrvation above. Even though my SD card is probably the best available in the market, it's read speed is almost identical to the BIS read speed. But BIS lagged behind in Write speed

what was the speed of your CF card? lexar has the 80x CF cards which are rated at 12 mb/s read/write speed which is equal to or better than the top end sd cards

I'm keen to use BIS more rather than main memory for programs (I think Dell got the balance wrong here), and from the above it looks like there is not a problem with BIS read speed, although write speed is poor.

I assume that this is not a problem for program storage as most of the time you are reading the exe and related files, and rarely (if ever) writing back to the program folder. Am I right?

Cheers, Peter
