Here's my dream-PDA that I believe it's doable today tech- and price-wise:
* 624 Mhz CPU
* 128 MB RAM, 128 MB ROM
* 16 MB 3D card
* 480x640 4" screen (so real VGA is more bearable)
* headphone jack, integrated mic
* CF type I/II & SD slots
* BT 1.2, WiFi 802.11b (no reason for BT 2.0 or faster WiFi, the PDA I/O wouldn't handle it anyway)
* IrDA FIR (the FIR protocol is 10x times faster/reliable than the standard really slow SIR protocol used now)
* 180 degree swivel 1.3 MP camera (maybe with small flash at the back of the PDA)
* 2200 mAh battery: 6 hours normal use, 7.5 hours minimum brightness, 10 hours mp3-only
* USB 2.0 host port (this would bring a new meaning to expansion - should require OS update to support more devices, like external optical drives)
Other features:
* Ability to charge via a PC USB port as well as the power charger.
* Upgrade Pocket IE. As it stands now, PIE is circa IE 5.0 and it is _full_ of security holes. Either that, or include a free NetFront copy, like Sony/PalmOne do.
* Ask Microsoft to add audio/video chat on Pocket MSN Messenger. That's why I want the swivel camera able to face different directions: to work as web camera from one side, and also used as a normal video/pic camera (just like in the old Sony Clie).
* Include Skype by default in the ROM image. This is an added value for VoIP businessmen.
* OEM the Resco image viewer for use with pics and the digital camera. The MS image viewer sucks too much.
* Write an app that is able to grab video from the camera. Just like in the old Sony Clie pdas.
* Include a neck lanyard. No crandle needed (to keep the price down). No pocket case required (available as extra only).
* Include a VNC VGA-capable utility in addition to the Terminal Services one (optional, geek reason for adding it here mostly).
Suggested price: $499
I would gladly pay $499 for this (which is a price that's doable IMHO considering that the very similar x50v is $419). Would you?
I agree with most - even the stuff I don't agree with wouldn't deter me from buying it... However, my perfect pda yet still achievable: (damn the cost :) )
* 624 Mhz CPU
* 128 MB RAM, 128 MB ROM
* Integrated 4 Gb microdrive
* 16 MB 3D card and publicised API
* 480x640 4" screen (so real VGA is more bearable)
* Sony Clie style clamshell design with swivel screen and miniture keypad with buttons for PIM and games. Advantage: more screen real estate - all the buttons on the other half of the clamshell.
headphone jack, integrated mic, mic jack
* CF type I/II & SD slots
* BT 1.2, WiFi 802.11g (so I can use 11g networks, even slowly)
* IrDA FIR
* 2200 mAh battery
* USB 2.0 host port (this would bring a new meaning to expansion - should require OS update to support more devices, like external optical drives)
Other features:
* Ability to charge via a PC USB port as well as the power charger.
* Delete PIE :P
* OEM the Resco image viewer for use with pics and the digital camera. The MS image viewer sucks too much.
* Vibrating alarm (I'm deaf, the current alarms are 100% useless)
I know there is a lot of bulk, there, but hey... I restrained myself to what is available now didn't I?

Well, that would only be useful for mp3 or movies only. I know of no one that needs more than 256 MBs of data anyway... :)
Also, maybe I am wrong, but microdrives are close to hard drives in architecture, and if that's true, don't expect more than 40 minutes of battery life if you use them all the time. Don't forget, even the 40 GB iPod has ONLY 20-30 minutes of battery life when its hard drive is ON and used. A friend of mine went to China for a photo session and he used the iPod as an external photo storage solution, and the battery was all used up after 20-30 minutes of file uploading, while the normal ipod battery time for mp3 playing is 12 hours (the hdd is going to sleep after reading the mp3 and loading it to the memory).
So trust me, you don't want microdrives, mini-hard drives and the like. Not before the scientists of this Earth have created an unlimited battery source. :D
>WiFi 802.11g (so I can use 11g networks, even slowly)
From what I know, all 802.11g APs allow backwards compatibility for 802.11b devices. If they don't, it's a software problem on the PDA's side and it should be fixed. So, I see no reason to include a significantly more expensive module for g, which eats up more battery and it wouldn't be able to deliver the speed anyway because the I/O of the PDA itself can't handle such fast connections.
>mic jack
You are a karaoke user? :D :)
>Delete PIE :P
Or upgrade it to 6.xx, patch it up, and include a firewall to the device. Indeed, might be cheaper to just include Netfront rather than asking MS to deliver all that in a timely manner. :P
I have both a 4 GB microdrive and a 1 GB SD card in my X50v and love it. I can put full length movies and tons of music on there. Surprisingly, the microdrive doesn't shorten battery as much as one would think (maybe 10-30 minutes?) - primarily because it only spins when accessed and because BetaPlayer can be setup with big 16 MB buffer which will buffer 2-3 mins of video.
Yes, the sony Clie's designs were absolutely awesome.
I owned a Sony Clie NR70v, best Palm-based handheld I ever used, the design was awesome, it was thin, long, built in keyboard, the screen was on the other side of the shell, camera... all that to the current X50v, and you got yourself a MONSTER!
win xp
100 gig hard drive
wifi and blue tooth
lan port
irda port that works (with my old lappy)
surrond speakers (that cost 5 bucks look in my pda for the joke)
radio tuner
tv tuner
good battery
wireless kb
sd & mmc & microdrive/cf & pc card slot
dvd player
cd player
dock
teliphone port
The only things that I really am going to miss when I get my x50v (arrives tomorrow!) are a standard USB cable hook up (a la the MyPal a730), and a quad band GSM phone capability. Oh, and I am going to miss my Ipaq 4355's 1440 mh battery. It NEVER died. Ever.
It must be a pain to get these Pocket PC's stable. I don't think any of the mfgr's have come out with a 480x640 GSM phone or a GSM phone PPC that has 2003 se on it.
BTW, one more thing I remembered while playing Solaira (or whatever this 3D game is called): the ultimate PDA should have a more game-friendly 4-way button, similar to the ones in gameboys.
I think that a PDA is too big for jewelry.
But hey, I still think of it as cool (with a gold-plated chain as an option, an aluminum chain as standard).

A mini laptop is the closest to what you want. My friend Alayna has an Inspiron 700m, and I think it's very nice, as it performs pretty good and looks good, just like its owner.
