Overwrite x50v Rom w Resco?
I was goofin in resco and making the odclient tweak (rename smaller file, gain 2mb).
Out of curiosity, I copied my new 1kb 'odclient.exe' into the windows folder as well... resco asked to overwrite as per usual but this time when i said do it I didn't get the usual 'cant write over rom' error. Resco warned me it was in rom and told me I may harm my Ax by doing this. As I dont use Odessy, I bravely said yes.
As far as I can tell, my new 1kb file was written to rom and I now have an additional 2mb free. I am using the A02 rom. Anyone care to check me on this?
What else could be purged from rom safely? I think the Dell update may have opened my Ax for a neet mod opportunity. A skinned back rom would be nice. I could back it up with the upgrade tool.
Cheers

When I put a new odclient.exe into the windows folder (I did it to change the icon) it just added another 2mb use to main memory.
As far as I can remember, once I removed the file and soft reset, the original came back (just as it does in the program files folder)
Basically, I think that any alterations of files that are stored in ROM are added to main memory, but the files are still in ROM available if the updated file is removed and automatically restored.

I soft reset twice and my Ax shows that 'odclientce.exe' is 1kb in both windows and program files. I have more than 30mb left after a soft reset with all my today apps and such running.
Cheers

If you remove the 1kb file though and sorft reset, does it come back as the original 2mb file?
With a clean system and odclient.exe removed from the program files folder I'm using less than 1mb of main memory for storage.

I removed my 1kb 'odclientce.exe' from program files and soft reset, it replaced the deleted file with a 1kb 'odclientce.exe', which is in fact the playlist who's name I modified and apparently wrote to rom. ;)

This looks like it works - I can certainly replace the 2MB ODclient file with a 1KB one. However...it'd be more useful if there was a way of writing files to the ROM as well. Some way of writing PI to ROM so it's there after a hard reset.
Used to be able to do it on a number of PalmOS devices....remove the built-in apps that weren't used and replace them with third-party apps.

So we can remove items from the ROM, and free up memory, but not put new items back into ROM? Thats pretty cool! does it work with other files?
Are there any utils out there thta allow full on ROM editing - removing and adding files?
------------------------
I just tried to delete a file form ROM and got the error message "\Windows\Bliss.tsk is in ROM memory! You cannot delete it."
I think the ODClient may be a special case (isn't it the only file that also replicates it self to program files ?)

Just had a hunt around, ODClient is one of a few files that do not have the System attribute set - perhaps non-system, files can be overwritten permanently ?
Whose game to test ?
There is a useful freeware utility called "Remote COmmand" which allows you to execute certain traditional DOS commands on your pda (they are actually executed n the PC itself
DL from http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities...ecommand.shtml
Here is a listing of the non-system files on my axim x50v - I think most of them actually come from 3rd party apps ...

HR \Windows\cemailsync.dll
HR \Windows\clocknot.exe
HR \Windows\calnot.exe

I think the best way to attack this is to find a way to modify the .img(or similar) file that comes with ROM updates from Dell.. this way we can modify the entire image (system files and what not), THEN have the Dell util burn the image we create..

Yeah, the device replaces the program files one, if it's missing with the one in /windows.
I wasn't clear. Try removing the one in /windows (not replacing) then soft reset and see if the 2mb one returns or if it stays gone.
It should definitely come back after a hard reset.
Like I said, I replaced my odclient.exe in the windows folder with my own one (with a nicer icon) with the a01 rom, so it's always been possible to overwrite this file. I have found that it's not truly overwriting the rom though, it is just putting the file in ram in the same way as it does when dll files are updated by installations.

The original discussion about this is here
To answer your question: You don't need Resco, you can do it exploring with windows. Just create a new txt file and rename it odclient.exe then copy it into the \Program Files\Funk Software\Odyssey Client folder.
If you use Odyssey though you'll also need to update the odClientCeAutoLaunchSmart.exe in /windows/startup to point to the file in the \windows folder. The file is in the above thread.

really? I can't even copy files from ROM! definitely a security risk if you are able to modify the ROM. my PC was destroyed by the CIH virus a few years ago, it wrote some garbage to the BIOS so it won't boot.

Anyone know how we can delete services? Memmaid looks like it will shut them down. I don't need BT for example.
