Just wondering, because i'm a 21yr old student (no I'm no geek, i just have a taste for new technology ), anyway, I was don't see that many students with PDA's, so i wanna know if there users on here and how do u use your axim x50v for everyday school use?
here, i am a senior in an univesity. I have v50x, tablet pc, laptops, and multiple desktops. However, my major is computer engineering, thus like to work on the computers. haha
Whoa, u got the whole ka-bang there, I was so interested in buying a tablet pc, but it just too wide, and i already have a dell labtop and a desktop, so there will be no use, only to show off to my fellow classmates. I'm a junior at my univerity, and my major is accounting, i wanted to do computer engineering and go work for dell in Austin, TX, but i hate hate hate doing binary codes, it just bothers me :O
I am a 17 year old student in 6th form at school (sorta like college). I haven't got my x50v yet but hopefully when I do get it, I intend to use it to manage calendar schedules for deadlines and tasks etc, my email, some general web browsing both in and out of the classroom for research etc, and chilling out at breaktimes with a quick game of something :)
Thats what I hope to do, I'm just waiting for it to arrive. Pretty exciting stuff...!
Ive already had a little taste of PDA with my Windows Mobile Smartphone but I want the real deal, as in full PDA with more power, so I settled on buying a Dell.
I use my 50v for email, web, appts, tasks, note taking (BT stowaway keyboard)and the ability to carry a large amount of info with me on my SD cards. In fact, I have gotten so use to using my Dell PPC that I just sold my laptop.
i'm in 10th grade but yah, i use my x50 for all that good stuff. So heres a rundown of everything i do during the average school day.
In the morning i turn on my axim while its still on the cradle (its also my main alarm, the volume thing isn't an issue, and its very reliable) and have it sync all my emails received over the night, which i read whenever. When i'm in class and there is an assignment due,or i just think of something that needs to be done, i whip it out (and my teachers don't care) copy it down, and put it out of mind (i'm really forgetful so that last part really isn't a choice ^-^). We have to read for 20 or so minutes during class so i take it out and read a few word documents (some over 500 pages in length) and have no problem reading them, just alot of scrolling hehe. Lunchtime i don't do much but play games since the nearest access point is off campus :S. Random Times when i'm really bored or not doing anything i'll review for some tests using a flash card program and or listen to music, mabey watch the occasional video ect ect. And as soon as i get home i throw my Ax on the cradle and see what needs to be taken care of in Outlook 2003 (Outlook 2k2 is included with the axim). I don't take notes with my Ax YET because i have no keyboard and a stylus only goes so far :).
Programs Used - Pocket Informant and Pocket Breeze for Tasks, schedualing, and today screen intergration.
RDCalc, the ultimate calculator
FlashIt, Easy Flashcard application
Betaplayer, one of the best video players for ppc's
PocketMusic, the best music player i've tried out , that can also play .OGG, however i've been recently having some problems with it quitting on me after 3 seconds of play on fresh installs, old versions, new versions, everything.
SkyForce and Warfare Incorporated are the only games i play and i can't seem to get enough.
Try a bunch of different applications and see what you like. I know theres a software suite specifically for students but i can't find it on my junky desk (i hope theres a program for that, too!) Happy hunting.
I park on a hill next to the University of Hawaii. I have to walk for about 17 minutes to get to my first class so I use my Axim as a MP3 player for the duration of my walk.
Once I get to class, I usually have about 10 minutes or so before class begins so I check my e-mail and check up on some websites before I turn the device off. It's kind of hard to take Physics notes with an Axim :).
Then I go to my next class, which is Economics. I bust out ClearVue Presentation and use it to view the Powerpoint slides that he posts up on the projector. Because he tends to cycle through the slides very quickly, I can use the Axim to review previous slides in case I missed something.
My next class after that is Math and I use the Axim as a calculator so I don't have to dig out my Ti-83+.
After that, I go to an engineering course. I use it to take down the homework that he gives us.
On the walk back to my car, I once again use the Axim as my MP3 player, and on the drive home a Belkin FM Transmitter works wonders while fighting rush traffic.
When I'm at home, I use it to watch videos when I feel like lying in bed instead of sitting at my computer.
The only thing that's kind of bad about the Axim is that, since it's not a full-fledged computer, I'm not as efficient and fast while using it, especially when trying to use word processor programs. But overall I'm glad I got the device over a laptop. It's MUCH easier carrying around an Axim compared to even a light 4 lb Powerbook.
I think you are in denial as far as the geek thing goes.
I use my X50 at school to view powerpoint slides and web pages that are part of my assignments. It works well with my Dell BT keyboard to take notes, although I haven't found a really great application for that yet. I have wireless travel router that I plug into the schools net. My classes are 3 hours long, and battery life does not seem to be an issue. Its also nice to have for those particularly boring lectures.
I just got my Axim at the beginning of the year and I love it. I'm a first-year Computer Engineering student at the Rochester Institue of Technology (New York) and I started off the year with nothing PDA. Since I had gotten a Palm m130 way back when (it's worth $40 now), I decided to break it out, but boy was that thing slow and old. Anyway, I was all set to buy an X30 when I lost my m130! I was so pissed at myself that I couldn't bare to spend the money on something more expensive. With a little time I got over it and finally set myself on buying the X50v and haven't looked back. On a typical day, I use it to check e-mail, very minor web surfing (nice wireless blanket here), schedule appointments, right down homework, take random notes (usually not school related), calculate things (graphing calc), and the occasional game. Not to mention playing MP3s! That was one of the main reasons to get this. I was seriously considering an iPod or iRiver, but I just don't listen to that much music to make something so narrow focused as an MP3 player worth it. I really like GSPlayer for it's simplicity and on mine it doesn't seem to bother the wireless and bluetooth like Pocket Player and PocketMusic did (wireless and bluetooth would mess up if I enabled while either player was playing). I also really like GSPlayer's startup time which is less than half of the other two. Anyway, I haven't customized too much yet beyond basic skinning and SPB Pocket Plus (great addon in my opinion), but I might give Pocket Informant and PocketBreeze a try if I get brave. All in all, I couldn't be happier with my Axim. Even so, I'm not ready to ditch either of my other computers for it (desktop and laptop) because there are some things that you just need the full-power/big screen beasts for...occasionally ;-)
I just got my Ax a week ago and I love it! I use it to schedule my classes and keep track of when final assignments are due / tests etc. My wife loves it because she can pop on my pc and look at my calendar to see what I have going on and plan around it (and nag me to make sure my HW is done..lol).
Mp3 player sometimes at work.
Use calc when my wife and I go shopping to make sure we're getting good deals (quantity/price etc)
Store Wi-Fi hotspot locations for easy recall when I need to hit one if I'm out and about. Sometimes I need to terminal into my server at home.
I just keep finding more and more things I can do with this ;)
Listen to music on the way to class, mess around with wi-fi between classes if there is extra time, use it with external keyboard to take notes in class, and if things get a bit boring, there's always NES and SNES emulation.
