People should definitely try the so-called "True VGA mode" and makeup their own mind about whether they like it better or not, depending of what applications(s) they use.

Especially since there are some free utilities to get the "True VGA mode".

BTW there is a very good thread discussing the pros and cons of "True VGA hacks":

That's an OK thread, but here's a better one that was started in Nov of '04...

I noticed you got your opinion in on the one you listed. I got mine in on the one I listed... ;)

It's not a "better one", just a different thread about the same topic. Yes, I posted my opinion in the thread mentionned, but it was not started by me, and it has the opinion of many others people.

It would have been nice if the OS had support to switch "on the fly" between the two VGA modes, but hey, you cannot ask too much from MSFT, it took them 3 years to give us the Landscape mode :)

How about an "OzVGA" optimised software list ??

Is there already a thread like this? I have tried several software downloads that are VGA enabled only to find that they do not display properly in OzVGA. Is there a list of programs that work in OzVGA??? I have read just about every relevant thread on the site and maybe I have just missed it.

I have been working on customizing my X50v for a few weeks now - and I need help. Here is my screenshot right now.

When I have a response or two, I will ask more specific questions. Just don't want to waste anyone's time.

No waste of time at all! That's what we're here for :) It takes some time to tweak the settings in true-vga mode so that everything reads well, but when set correctly you may find that you never go back. A couple of things I noticed.... Have you set the screen font sizes to be larger? Look under "System/screen/text size". I have it set to second largest.

I'm not familiar with some of the today plugins you're using, but when I setup my Ax I searched for plugins that were VGA aware and customizable for true-vga mode. Not all are capable of tweaking the text so that it is 'readable' in true-vga mode.

Here's a copy of my screen in true-vga. The plugins I'm using are:

Wisbar Advance 2 (increased the font size a bit)
Weather Panel
iLauncher
Pocket Breeze

I quite agree that it would be very nice to have a list of true VGA software.

The only programs that I know of which are specifically written for true VGA mode are the two Dell games - Enigmo and Stunt Car Extreme - and another game called Cube (all games).

BetaPlayer will run in true VGA.

I am sure there are some others, but as PDA VGA screens are relatively new, few software houses have got round to writing programs (or adapting their exisitng programs) for true VGA.

Also, bear in mind that VGA software needs to be backwards compatible to run on QVGA if it is to achieve any reasonable sales.

There are acutally quite a few titles written to use native VGA resolutions *without any hacks* like Pocket Informant, PocketBreeze, ContactBreeze, Resco Explorer, Resco Photo, WeatherPanel, Bejeweled1/2, etc off the top of my head and others that are listed on the first page to this thread. The problem is if the developer doesn't make use of the VGA to create a really tight and small UI then people often proclaim it's "not true VGA". Whatever that's beginning to mean..

Some people just prefer a lot of screen real estate which comes with very small interfaces over VGA. Developers don't rush to cater to this because there are a lot of people out there that would hate working a UI that small. About all they could do is make it customizable or ofter a couple modes, which again adds to the complication.

And in 3 years Pocket TV hasn't improved past mpeg 1, let's not talk about Microsoft
:rolling:

I almost never use "true vga" anymore. Now that I have PTvncHires, I do all my web browsing through vnc, a huge improvement over Pocket IE/Netfront even in true VGA. And let's quit using the stupid term "True VGA", just because fonts and menus are larger, does not make them non-vga. The only built in application I know of that is not truly VGA is Pocket IE. Try viewing a excel sheet at 50 percent on a VGA device, and then on a QVGA, and tell me that there isn't a huge difference. Pocket Excel and many other apps always run in true vga. Once more software is made properly for VGA devices, I don't think this will even be an issue.

> And in 3 years Pocket TV hasn't improved past mpeg 1, let's not talk about Microsoft

You missed a few significant developments: We have optimized PocketTV to take advantage of several hardware accelerator chips (ATI Imageon and Intel 2700G) allowing VGA-resolution playback at full framerate on the devices that have these video chips. And we include all that in the freeware version.

And naturally, PocketTV plays in true VGA resolution on native VGA devices.

> And let's quit using the stupid term "True VGA", just because fonts and menus are larger, does not make them non-vga.

Totally agree, this "True VGA" term only refers to the size of the UI elements, not the resolution of the display!
