Freed Add'l 1.2mb Ram!

After I got rid of Odessy Client (2MB), I started to look around for some additional files to get rid of. If you're like me, RAM is important. Since I'm a software junky, I got tons installed.

Go through the Activesync Explorer and to the Windows Directory. Copy all the Help Files (*.htm extension)to a folder in your memory card! Freed up 1.2MB of RAM on my X50v.

And there is no trouble clicking for help and getting to those files?

Three things....(1) you say "copy" all the help files. Do you mean move them? Surely if I copy them then all I do is duplicate them. I tried to move them and get the message that they are in ROM and can't be moved. (2) does this only work with .htm files that are associated with additional software? (3) Do they have to be in any specific directory on the SD card?

Correction, "Move" is the term I meant. Once you move them, you will not be able to access them through the program but through file explorer. ROM files cannot be moved, but installed programs can.

So if the files are in ROM by deleting them wouldn't you be freeing up ROM not RAM? I'd rather have easy access to help files if I need them than an extra 1.2 megs of BIS.

Unfortunately you can't delete things from ROM. Built-In storage eats at the RAM eventually. Most of the software are self explanatory, so I hardly find the need to look at the help files. You can always move them back and it will recognize the link from the programs.

I dont worry too much about it... Come OCT. (2005-ce) it wont matter much... Prob have to reinstall everything anyways... Rom will be used for windows/programs and ram will be used just to run programs. I think thats a good thing, not to mention we dont have to worry about hard resets from total battery usage.

Anyway, I am pretty sure this is already known here. Atleast I already knew of this ram saving "trick".

When you're installing software are you letting it install it in the default location or are you telling it where to install? If you do the latter you can install the programs in Built In Storage and save your RAM. You'll still lose some RAM for the dlls and other stuff the apps need in the Windows folder but you won't use as much RAM.

You probably "knew this trick" after reading it in the Sticky, which refers to this original post. Even when programs are installed in the BIS--you'll find that most of it goes into the Windows Dir..so BIS eventually eats up the RAM. Getting rid of Help Files will save RAM, but you won't be able to get to it by tapping on the help menu within the program. Just use file explorer to find it in the storage card or where ever you moved it.

When you have a lot of applications every little bit of ram helps!

Here's the trick: Everytime you install an application an *.UNLOAD file is put into Windows. Through ActiveSync, put the file on your desktop and then open it in notepad. It will tell you all the files put on your device by the installer. Also, sometimes a *.DLL file will be put into /Windows/AppMgr/. Both of these files can be moved somewhere else to save space, but the real savings comes from moving the files listed in the *.UNLOAD.

For *.HTM and *.BMP and *.2BP files, move them to your storage card install directory. Click on the HTM file to open it in Internet Explorer, then make a favorite. This way you still have access to help, though not through the standard help menu. (The bitmap pictures can often take up more memory than the .htm files.)

Also, if *.DLL files are put into windows, sometimes you can also move them to your storage card install directory.

If a program puts it's install into Program Files instead of the place you specified on the storage card (the folder will be empty), move the files there and make a new shortcut to the *.EXE in Windows/Start Menu/

Finally, anytime a program uses a today plug-in, and you don't need it, feel free to disable the plugin and move the associated *.DLL file to you install directory from Windows.
