Thanks, but that didn't give me any more informatin than I'd already gotten from Dell. Here's the quote on that part of the process from the blog: "Upgrade
The Dell utility walks you through the update process, including saving the current ROM."
And the upgrade *did* walk me through my "WinXP-cradle-connected- directly-to-my-desktop" (no hub) upgrade. The problem was that, after going into the saving the current ROM, the upgrade box would disappear from my screen and the upgrade stopped.
I tried to get around this by skipping the save the current ROM step (I'd already backed up via Sprite), but the same thing happened - the upgrade process stopped and the on screen upgrade box disappeared. I never was able to get past this point, even though I tried 6 or 7 times.
A while back others were running into this, too, so I wondered if any fixes had been found since then. And I have searched , but either found nothing (too specific a search) or found too much and wasn't able to find what I was looking for in the large amount of information.
when you choose to save the current ROM I think it only saves the current ROM ! If I remember correctly you must choose to update the ROM and it will offer both choises (save AND update).

I tried both ways and got the same results - the upgrade box disappeared.
Nelia, just to confirm, your having problems upgrading the ROM via ActiveSync or have you tried other methods (via SD card or WiFi)? If just ActiveSync, can you provide details on your USB setup (e.g. USB 1 or 2, settings in BIOS, onboard USB port or PCI or hub, etc)?
I experienced the exact same problems you are describing. After some 15 attempts I gave up and used my wifes w2000 machine. The upgrade went very smooth there.
So it could be an issue with hardware or installed software?
That's interesting Jake. I suspect the first machine failed because of USB incompatability issues. Could you tell us the USB specs and setup of both machines? Please include if you can each machines USB BIOS settngs, chipset, onboard or PCI based USB ports, was a USB hub or repeater used, USB 1.0/1.1 or 2.0, were other USB devices plugged-in and operating at the time, etc. I really think this will help narrow down the ROM update problem.
It seems like the lack of posting a link is what is going on...I didn't always search right the first time either.....instead of making fun or being rude just post a link to what they need..

and in regards to a fix-no there is no fix to the rom upgrade process and having it work.
There has been several posts about this, and they all go the same way, do you have a usb hub hooked up, did you do this or that, follow their instructions. Thanks but the issue is not with us being able to sync as we always do and select a few options to update the rom-it is a problem with the utility and the usb connection of pushing the rom to the pcc, because backing up works fine. Who knows what causes it, but if your using the microsoft standard usb drivers, then perhaps dell should try fixing the problem like those of us who haven't had success are waiting for.

More specifically, Dell should perform hardware compatability and certification testing with USB controllers - this is where I believe the problem lies. A limited number of USB controllers do not support the bandwidth required to properly upload the new ROM. From what I can gather, most people having problems with ROM updates are using older USB 1.0/1.1 controllers or have another bandwidth related issue.

I've just used ActiveSyn at this point. USB 2 no hub Win XP SP2.
I just got wireless going over the past couple of days, so will give that a try. How does it work via an SD card?
