hi,
does anyone know of a software that will enable the x50v to function as a mass storage device (like usb disk-on-key)?
I would like to use the x50v as a card reader and be able to connect it to computers that do not have activesync on them for file transfer purpose.
my old palm has a utility called card export that could do that and I was wondering if its possible to do so in PPC.
get a usb reader and storage card then you can transfer anything you want to the card from any computer with a usb port then put the card in your axim and away you go

I already have a 1GB SD card that I am using for file storage, and I have a card reader that I carry with me, but I want to ditch the card reader and carry only the axim with the sync cable. all I need now is a software that implements the mass storage device API on the axim.
Can't you just use Explore in ActiveSync to transfer any files to and from the Axim Main Memory, Built In Storage, and any SD or CF cards mounted in it?
Oooops....sorry...re-read your original post and just saw you are looking to do this without having ActiveSync installed.
I would think you would still need to load some type of syncing program to be able to do this with the Axim.
Read that article a while ago myself and am glad to see them coming out.
My only concern is how well the card holds is shape where the hinges are placed. Having one of these cards bend while being inserted in the slot, and getting stuck, would not be a fun situation.
Has anyone tried it on the Axim/x50/v i have been looking for an app like this for months so now i can stop lugging around my opalm as a card reader lol specs for card export

OMG!!!
:jd:
This works fine on my X50v!
Even installed it to BIS.
It wasn't a pure test because right now I only have access to a computer that has already recognized my Axim in the past.
I was however able to close ActiveSync and remove it from memory, hook up my USB sync-n-charge cable, and the Axim was immediately recognized as a new Removable disk.
Once recognized I was able to access files on the Axim via my laptop.
I could open Windows Explorer, browse the CF card in my Axim, double-click on a WMV file and it opened up and played in WMP10 on my laptop.
:approve:
Transferring files is MUCH faster with this program.
511MB video file copied in 15 minutes.
Not as fast as a standard card reader but much faster than through the same cable using ActiveSync.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you yooooooooooooooo hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been begging for this since I moved from Palm to PPC! realy it's the only program I missed and now we finally have it. Now you can connect your PPC as a removable storage to any PC w/o the need of AS! MUST HAVE !
I think it should be on the front page' and stay there! It's not just another app - it changes the way one uses his or her pda!
Thank you softick (Amazing ' but I asked them to port their prog to ppc and they replied it probably would be ready by June. good to see it wasn't just talking!)
The big challenge is that Pocket PC's -- no matter how you sync -- are limited to USB 1.1 speeds. That means that it would take many, many hours to synchronize even a gig of data. I have a 4 gig microdrive for my Axim, which allows me to use it as an MP3 player. The only way I've found to syncronize that much info is through a card reader, not through the Axim itself.
It would be very nice if they would implement USB 2.0 on these things. . . .
But you could always transfer files by WIFI...which is much quicker. This program is handy for us on the road that need to transfer files for presentations etc - we don't need that card reader anymore!
Apparently WM2005 will let the Axim mount as a Mass Storage device, so wait until we get the update to have native support.
any confirmation on this?
i am seriously gonna get this softick program if wm5 doesnt support this mass storage device feature...& goodbye active sync. at last i can now plug my x50v into my friends computer and start sending stuff. :approve:
Maybe it's just me being a penny pinching Scotman, but why should I have to pay for something that should just happen with the OS?
I'm using Windows XP and Windows 2003SE so why did I have to buy Resco Explorer to stream my wifi files over the air? Why should I need a third party utility to let XP use my PPC as mass storage device?
Yet, they manage to put Windows Media Player in! Not something which you'd automatically look for in an OS...and for which there are free and better third party alternatives.
Hopefully WM5 will obviate the need for these third party "Tricks" which the OS should do without the user even realising it's anything special.
Okay, rant over - I'm off to boil that haggis I caught this morning.
