Now you see it, Now you dont....but its still there?

Question:
The other day, I took my 1.0gig Sd card and placed it into my card reader/writer and deleted 2 movies with the intent on placing the new Patriots SuperBowl vid (that I created) on the SD card.
The vid is not large and after deleting the other two vids, you would naturally assume there was enough space.
well... The Superbowl vid didnt transfer with the message "not enough space..."
I took the SD card out of the reader and placed it in my AX.
My Ax still showed the name of the file but it was '0 k'(not there).
I deleted the files from the ax but for some reason the superbowl vid still would not transfer to the SD card Via the writer.
In the end I wound up moving files I wanted and Formatted the SD card to get rid of these "ghosts" that were taking up space but apparently didnt exist.

What's going on here?.... Any suggestions?
