ROM Update Without Reloading S/W
I updated my ROM last night without difficulty. There was no way that I was going to reload all of my software, e-Books, etc. Here's what I gleaned from other posts on the forum. Worked fine, and Axim still utilizes all of the new features... as far as I can tell.
1. Use back-up utility on Axim to make full back-up on your SD or CF card, or back up on PC using ActiveSync back-up option.
2. Update ROM, make copy of current ROM as directed. Process takes about 20 minutes.
3. Restore full back-up made in #1.
4. Use Explore option in ActiveSync to find WirelessButton.exe in Windows directory on Axim.
5. Make a shortcut of WirelessButton.exe in Windows directory. Cut and paste it into Windows/AppButtons directory. Delete (or rename to old) current Wireless Power shortcut. Rename shortcut you made to "Wireless Power".
6. Some previous settings on the Axim may have been lost- like password protect. You will have to reset those. You may have to renew partnership with ActiveSync.

If I do as you suggest, does that mean I can simply restore all of my settings so that I don't have to return to the techs at work to reinstall the WEP?

I have a wireless network at home, and my settings were fine after the update and restore. (I have previously backed up my data and restored without a ROM update, without problems as well.) I think that your WEP settings from work would be restored as well.

Yes, but when you restored, did all of the new ROM installations work correctly, such as the need to hit the WIFI button twice. I have heard that if you restore settiings that you would overwrite the new settings with the old ones.

No, the WiFI button is the only thing that does not work after restore. That's what you are correcting in my steps 4 & 5. All of the other features seem to work fine.

One more note, after you update the ROM, but before restore, look in the Windows directory. You will see many new files with the date of 1/6/05. After you restore, these files still remain. These are many of the new features associated with the update. The WiFi button link in the AppButtons directory is overwritten. The other files in the Windows directory are not.

OH, OK. I was looking at Active Sync on the Axim. I've got to look at it on the PC, correct?

Yes, ActiveSync on the PC is where you find Explore for my procedure. You won't have the ability to make a shortcut on the Axim with its File Explorer.

OK. Great. Thanks and sorry for all the questions. Just one more: Can I do this with a Guest Partnership?

Sorry, I don't know if a Guest Partnership will work. I'm sure if you try it, you will know pretty quick.
