Novice Question: Sync'ing w/o cradle???
Hi,
I've been using an Axim X5 Advanced for about a year-and-a-half. I've always sync'd with the cradle. I just received a new X50v, and found a number of threads about problems sync'ing with the cradle.
My question is, if I want to sync via WiFi or Bluetooth, what do I need to add to my desktop to allow such connections? By the way, I have a DELL Dimension 2400, P4 2.4GHz PC.
I appreciate any help anyone can provide as I am completely uninformed about this topic.
Thanks,
Gary

Right click on the Active Sync icon in your system tray and select CONNECTION SETTINGS.
Make sure you have ALLOW ETHERNET AND RAS CONNECTIONS checked. Once you're connected via WiFi to your router, you should be able to open Active Sync on your x50 and go nuts!

You also need to make sure that you have NETBIOS enabled over TCP/IP in the properties section of the network adapter you are using on your PC.
Also, you probably want to make sure that you check the "stay connected" option in Activesync on your PPC.
If this isn't enough detail, let me know.

:approve: I concur...
Since I set my x50v up to sync by WiFi I haven't really used my cradle for anything but desktop charging. In fact, I ususally charge it by using the mobile charger or USB sync/charge cable on my laptop.
You may want to refer to the WiFi and ActiveSync threads if you have a problem ...

I want to thank everyone for their help. I really appreciate it; however, I believe I didn't state my questions adequately. I don't even know what needs to be added to my desktop to allow it to connect to anything via a wireless connection.
What specific hardware needs to be present to allow a wireless connection? Some sort of card or plug-in device with an infrared port/window???
Thanks alot for the help.
Gary

you need to purchase a network router, it has the access point you need to use WI-FI with your desktop.

Bingo! Thanks. So, something similar to this device:
http://tinyurl.com/5ar6p
is needed? It needs to specifically say "wireless." Just as an aside, what additional hardware would I use to connect my other PC and laptop wirelessly??
I appreciate your help and don't mean to take advantage. In looking through my PC's help software and online, it seems there just aren't straitforward, simple explanations.
Thanks,
Gary

OOps. Sorry - I thought you already had the hardware.
Yes, you will need a wireless router or access point. You will need either ethernet cards for your computer to attach to your router via a cat5 cable or your need wireless cards. For a desktop you would buy a PCI card, for a notebook, you would buy a PCMCIA card (unless the notebook already has wireless capability built in).
I use all Linksys products, but I am sure any other manufacturer would do. Check out these links to get an idea. I hope this helps. :approve:

Thanks, I see that my local Wal-Mart has the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router for $59.94 and the Linksys 802.11g USB adapter for $49.96. Do these prices seem to be in line with what others paid?
Thanks,
Gary

If you have cable internet you should already have a PCI card in your computer, you just hook your router up. also a lot of the wireless routers come with a PCMCIA card for the notebook included in the package. I have Microsoft Broadband Networking "Wireless-G Kit" and it included the PCMCIA card.

As far as I'm concerned, it's easier to buy a wireless router instead of using BT to connect your Axim to your computer.
I have two USB BT adaptors sitting around collecting dust because it's easier/faster to connect through WiFi.

Right, I have the card in my computer. I'm leaning toward the USB Adapter so it can be moved to the computer my boys use or to my wife's laptop when she requires.

I don't know how the USB adapter works, but if you have a router connected to your main computer, the one that has cable internet attached to it, you don't need anything but ethernet cards in your wifes laptop and your sons computer to share wireless networking between them, as long as they are not to far apart. In other words all computers could be on the internet at the same time, you could also sync wireless with your Axim and surf the internet with it. No need to move it from computer to computer.
good luck, Dale Adamson
It has to be a wireless adapter card in the laptop, some of the newer laptops already have WI-FI intergrated in. The card in your sons computer should be a PCI wireless adapter.

Thanks for the good information. I'll check my wife's laptop to see if she has one. My sons PC does have an ethernet card, but I don't know if it's the proper card. I'll have to give it a go.
Thanks Again,
