Do you really think they read the forums to know whether we'll pay for the new OS or not ?
They know it, they have armies of marketing and data-mining guys who make models of us. And it's not very difficult: Dell Axim owners are often rather rich people who prefer to be up-to-date technologically, even if it costs them big bucks. Aren't you ? Else you wouldn't have an x50. I know I am

I cannot argue with that. Paying big bucks for a little piece of equipment (of arguable utility to some) can only put Dell or any other company in a position of greater responsibility towards its clients. That would ideally mean respect, but since we are talking about industry (and a highly competitive one) it is translated in keeping happy the customers who have a greater possibility of returning and buying again from them. Equilibrating the two parametrs ie covering the upgrade expenses by making us pay for it and investing in client satsfaction (and thus to a returning customer) by giving it to us free is not an easy or simple thing to do. I know for one that I won't be a returning customer if they do not offer the upgrade in some (or if the price is not reasonable).

Yes, I totally agree with that. Unfortunately for us, they don't focus on EVERYONE's satisfaction, but on a balance between customers satisfaction and profit.

Well, and what if in two years from now the new Dell Axim x90w is out, with a 2GHz processor, 512MB RAM and 1GB BIS, a 4.2' screen that makes 1024x768, a USB2.0 host, a built-in 4MPixels camera, GSM/GPRS, a 64MB ATI 3D graphical chip, and it makes coffee ?
Don't lie to yourself, you know you'll buy it

I'd only buy it if it would rub my bunions, too.
Count me in on the petition, though, if you get it going.

I agree also guys, count me in.....
I may be willing to pay for it if it's not a big amount. At least it will be accessible. The important thing is for it to be available.

If they don't offer a migration path then I guess I will be getting a lot of free stuff from Dell since I will be threatining law suits.

Dell would just tell you that the rep you communicated with was incorrect. I highly doubt they would feel threatened by any lawsuit based on that email.

I will sign this petition indicating my support of any petition that will increase Dell's awareneness that upgradeability is a key concern when I make a product purchase.
By the way, why is this thread 3 pages long with no actual petition arising?

I would like everyone's input for the wording of the petition so we can end up with the most effective statement. I will start a petition as soon as we can hammer out the wording of it. Thanks for the the help everyone.

Yeah an upgrade to WM2005 would be nice but Dell is not obligated to upgrade handhelds they sell everytime a better OS for PPCs' comes out. So lets not start calling dell names just yet, cause if microsoft said that they where going to make Longhorn not just for desktop but PDAs' as well, would dell be at fault if they don't offer a free upgrade for that too. Most likely we are going to have to pay for it so be prepared.IMHO.

You are missing the point. Most of us would be thrilled if we have the option of paying a fair price for an upgrade. The question is whether Dell will actually make the upgrade available in the first place.
