Getting rid of WM Player

I don't know about you guys but I like using Pocket Music 3.1 and Beta Player and certainly have no use for Windows Media Player. So, I created an empty .txt file called WMPlayer, changed the extension to WMPlayer.dll and copied it into the Windows directory. Hola! Freed up 1.08MB of RAM.

Of course...I made a copy of the DLL file on my storage card just in case. If you don't use WMP, try it out and free up some valuable RAM.

Good tip :approve:

You can do the same thing with Odyssey Client in Program Files\Funk Software\Odyssey Client and with home.exe (if you don't use "Home")in the Windows folder. Total saving is 4.42 MB.

any chance you could briefly outline the steps here...5 megs for useless data seems reasonable to delete

I looked at replacing home.exe, but it seems to be in ROM and can't be deleted. Even if it could, I don't see how replacing a file in ROM would free up RAM.

Sure. No problem.

To be absolutely safe, in case you ever change your mind, create a new folder called "Old Files" in Built-in-Storage or on a memory card.

Then copy the "home.exe" and "WMPlayer.dll" files from the Windows folder to this new folder and also copy "OdClientCE.exe" from Program Files\Funk Software\Odyssey Client. This is not absolutely necessary, however.

Next, right click on an empty space on you PC Desktop and select New>Text Message. This will create a file icon on your desktop. This will be a 0 byte file.

Rename this file icon to "OdClientCE.exe". Then, using ActiveSync>Explore go to My Pocket PC\Program Files\Funk Software\Odyssey Client and copy the 0 Byte file to this folder. You will get an "Overwrite ?" message - Click Yes.

Then rename the Desktop icon again to "home.exe" and copy this to the PDA Windows folder. Again Overwrite the existing file. Finally rename the desktop icon yet again to "WMPlayer.dll" and copy this to the PDA Windows folder in exactly the same way.

Thats it. Much easier to do than to describe. It will save you 4.42MB of valuable RAM.

If you have any problems, please come back and I will do my best to help.

Yes, there is a copy in ROM, but there is a second copy in RAM and overwriting this with a 0 byte file of the same name will save 1.1 MB of valuable RAM. :approve:

But doesn't removing OdClientCE.exe kill wifi access?

And what is home.exe?

Hi,

I have done "memory optimization" tricks myself, but the total memory remained the same as before, which is 61.75 MB.

Am I missing something embarrassingly obvious??

No. There is a second copy in the OS in ROM.

If you open the Programs screen you will see a "Home" icon which opens up a program selection screen. Very few people use this. If you are one of them, then you can overwrite the home.exe file with a 0 byte file of the same name and save RAM space. If you do this, it is also sensible to delete the "Home" Shortcut home.lnk from the Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

I am afraid so !!

You do not increase the amount of RAM - that cannot be done except by adding new chips inside the Axim. What you have done is to save the amount of RAM which is used for storage and this frees up more space for programs to run. :approve:

Oh....

I am utterly ashamed now.. Instead of asking stupid questions, maybe in future I should suffer in silence... ;)

Anyway, thanks a lot for the clarification and I'll implement the optimization yet again! :)

There are no stupid questions in a forum. It's hard sometimes to search through threads for a single answer.

Davrol--thanks for the home.exe info. I didn't realized I can zero RAM that too. Most of the software in RAM that comes pre-installed are "bloatware" in my opinion. Oh, check out my thread on moving the Help Files not in ROM to storage card. Saved me 1.2MB!
