Installing software locations

I want to install my software on a memory card, but can I have it organized my own ways? Like I want to put all my programs in "Program Files" folder like it does on the PC. ANd have my music in a music folder, and movies in a movies folder. Is that possible, and good way of doing it?

It may be possible, but I don't know how to do so. After installing dozens of titles over the last few years it appears that ActiveSync only allows you to point to a location, not a specific folder. Hopefully someone can help us!

BTW, you can load movies, music, etc. into folders. I do so using a Viking memory card reader and loading via my PC. Its much faster too.

If you're installing from CAB files, you can specify where the app goes using CABINSTL.

There are two solutions.

1. Install from a CAB file with CabInstall, like Socpsy said. But it's not always possible.

2. Move the installed application manually in File Explorer or on your PC through the "Explore" window. Here you can create directories, move files, etc. Then you create a proper shortcut pointing to the new location, and voila !

Only problem of the second solution, some applications (not all!) require some registry keys to work properly. And it becomes a bit more complicated to make them work (but it's feasible, I do it all the time). You'd need a registry editor, and it's dangerous to use (It can force you to a hard reset).

My 1Gb SD card has only the following folders on its root:
\My Documents
\Program Files
\Games
\Temp

So where do the programs install to by default then? Do they all just install anywhere they want? or is there a pattern or standard?

Generally, ActiveSync "wants" to install in main memory, but of course, you can change that to either a memory card or BIS.
