I was on the verge of buying Motorola V710 to use with my X50V but read about Verizon crippling BT. Found out Telus (Canada) does same. I'm leaving Telus for Rogers which enables full BT.
Telus claims it limits bluetooth on its phones due to "outstanding issues of Digital Rights Management."
But every dealer I've talked to says they limit BT for revenue enhancement as Telus offers picture and video messaging options at $0.25 and $0.50 respectively or as a bundle ranging in price from $2 - $10/month.
So riddle me this....
1. Why do they not prohibit sales of sync cables which can be used to transfer items, (MP3s) which I suspect are contrary to Digital Rights Movement, to phones which are MP3 player enabled?
Telus is most eager to sell any phone add on, sync cables not withstanding.
2. Why isn't BT crippled on Telus' Blackberry and Audiovox 6600?
Appears inconsistent to me....
I know of more than a few customers, myself included, who are leaving Telus due to IMHO, what I could call a very short sited attempt at revenue enhancement. Wouldn't Telus rather have customers paying, speculating on average, C$35/month than not at all?
As mentioned before, I don't find the "Future is Friendly" with Telus.
I can't speak for Verizon.
Insites welcome...

The link you posted is ok, but you have an X50v, so it's easy to get connected without all that work!
When you paired the X50 to the V710, did it create an entry in Bluetooth Manager? There should be one called "Motorola Phone: Dial-Up Network...", if not, pair the devices to get this entry
Double-tap to connect, or Tap-Hold and select Connect, you will have a Connection Box appear, select "New Connection..." and double-tap. Enter VZW in the Connection name and #777 in the Phone number, click ok and you'll now have the User name is xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3G.com, and password, vzw, no domain entry is required, click ok and you'll be connected.
There's no need to do any changes to any other connection settings, I leave mine on "Network"
After this, all you'll need to do is go into the Bluetooth Manager, double-tap on "Motorola Phone: Dial-Up Network..." and select VZW. enter your password if you chose not to save it, or enter it, saver it, and next time it'll connect with 1 less tap
Gary :)
hey, gary. thanks for the post. i followed your instructions and it worked once, but has failed subsequently. i ended my surfing session by double tapping the BT icon in bottom right corner and pushed "turn bluetooth off". could this have changed the settings?
also, i went to start>settings>connections tab>connections>manage existing connections, and i clicked on edit the vzw entry, which first showed "bluetooth dialup modem", then #777 as the number to be dialed, then the next screen didn't have the user name and password info that i had put in early, so i re-entered that. (as an aside, is there anything important that needs to be selected in the advanced section?) so, when i went back into edit to see that the user name/pwsd input stuck, the axim had changed the vzw pwsd to a 16 digit pswd (unreadable since all asterisks). is this an error?
thanks in advance for any insight you can give me.

*** EDIT *** well, i deleted everything and repeated the process a couple times... third time was a charm (so far), and the setup appears to be holding. weird.

This is exactly the story with Verizon. I bought the MOTO v710 just to interface it with my x50v via bluetooth. They even look like a paired set. Fortunately, when they "crippled" the BT functions, they left the DUN profile, so at least I can use it for Internet (mostly on Free Weekends and Evenings). All other OBEX type transfers I had wanted have been substituted with USB cable (to PC) or TransFlash transfer (via SD adapter to Axim).
Dial Up Networking works exactly as mention in previous posts. If it wasnt that Verizon has best coverage in my area, I would leave as well for better BlueTooth (I remember the joy of pairing my Ipaq 2215 with my Sony Ericson candybar phone.).
I have seen several conflicting accounts of using the V710 blue tooh connection. The latest story I got today from Verizon Wireless is attached below. What really is the path from the dark side
Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless website. As part of our Worry Free Guarantee, your concern becomes our concern the first time you contact us. We are happy to assist you with your Motorola v710 question.
Verizon Wireless offers two options to establish a wireless Internet connection via Bluetooth from your Motorola v710. This feature is only supported on a Microsoft Windows based PC.
The first option is the basic Mobile Office connection, which will allow a connection speed of 14.4 Kbps to the default Verizon Wireless Quick 2 Net circuit-switched data connection or to your existing Internet Service Provider.
There is no additional access fee for the basic Mobile Office service, as usage is deducted directly from your regular voice plan allowance. The dial-up networking connection information is listed below.
Access Number: #777
Username: qnc
Password: qnc
The second option is the NationalAccess service, which offers connection speeds averaging up to 60 - 80 Kbps, with burst rates of up to 144 Kbps. NationalAccess is a premium service, requiring the addition of a NationalAccess pricing plan.
The pricing structure for this premium service is as follows:
All the information above has been quite informative. I too have a Motorola V710 and Axim x50V. My cell phone carrier is Telus and i would like to connect to the internet using the bluetooth feature. I understand that you can't transfer files using the bluetooth, but that shouldn't limit it's ability to connect to the internet. If there is anyone that uses Telus and bluetooth to connect to the internet, I would love to know how. It appears there are a number of people who also need some advice. Thanks much
If you get the newer phone, the e815, you can enable the OBEX support (file transfer over BT) though some modification, full guides are at www.howardforums.com. Unfortunately no one has devised a way to reenable this on the v710. The e815 has DUN (connecting to internet) disabled by default, but it can be enabled by pressing ##DIALUP very quickly and you should see a message along the lines of Dial-Up Enabled. You can then follow the same instructions for the V710 to get online.

Here are the exact settings I use, and I connect every day. I've never been charged an additional fees by Verizon either.
Of couse, you need to set up the bluetooth partnership first. You have to do that on both the Axim and V710. I'll assume that the typical Aximsite visitor has no problems doing this.
Then go to Manage connections: and set up the following:
General: My baud rate is set to 115200 (baud rate is limited by the phone, not the Axim). I did not enter any extra dial strings.
I checked "Cancel if not connected in 120 seconds"
Connection Prefs:
data bits 8
parity: none
stop bits 1
flow control hardware
TCP/IP:
Use server assigned IP Address
I have "software compression" and "IP header compression" checked.
Servers:
Checked Use server assigned addresses.
I used to have a Verizon Kyocera 7135. On that phone, I used QNC. But, for some reason, I can't use QNC on the new phone. So, I'm fairly certain the info that my fellow sith got from Verizon was incorrect (incorrect info from verizon tech support? Who would have thunk it....).
I actually called up Verizon tech support, read them my settings, and asked if I would be hit with any "NationalAccess" charges. They said "not with this phone" - whatever that means.
If you intend to use Verizon's SMTP server, you need to set up a free account at Vtext.com. Enable SMTP authentication, and use yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com as the username, and your password from Vtext.com as the password. There is not charge for the vtext account.
