E-mail (messaging) and my x50v

As a fairly non-technical user of my brand new x50v, I am having trouble with the e-mail function. When I have the built-in Wi-Fi enabled, I cannot send or receive e-mails when my PDA is not in the cradle. The e-mail function only seems to work when the PDA is in the cradle and connected to the laptop. Is this normal? If so it is different to what I was expecting. I thought I could send/receive e-mails through our Wireless ADSL router.

Hope someone can help me with this annoying problem.

Thanks

Well lets see here. First do you have your wi-fi set up and working otherwise? Can you get on the internet with your Axim? If you need info doing that check out the Wi-FI Guide. Lots of good info there regarding Wi-FI and the Axim. Including email.

Next, have you set up your email accounts on the Axim. You need the POP3 settings like you may have used to set up your desktop outlook or outlook express. These settings will depend on what ISP or mail service you are using. (hint hint ~ more info needed) For a general step by step look below. You will have to tweek it a bit depending on your ISP/mail settings. But it should get you going in the right direction.

Let us know if you need more help. Just try and provide some more info. Good Luck~

Adam

Start>Messaging>Accounts>New Account

Page 1/4 ~ E-mail Address
This is easy, enter your email address
Next....

Page 2/4 ~ User information
The "your name" part is what ever you want. It has no bearing on the settings.

User name is the part of your email before the @ sign (ie USERNAME@.com)

Password is your email password

Check the box for Save Password
Next....

Page 3/4 ~ Account information

Account type is POP3

Account Name is what ever you want it to be. If you set up more then one this can be very helpfull. I just used my username, same as the last page.

next....

Page 4/4 ~ Server information

This is where it can be a little different for some people. 99% of the time it is MAIL..COM, From looking at the Comcast site it appears they use MAIL.COMCAST.NET for the incomming and SMTP.COMCAST.NET for the out going. You can try these. But this is one of the areas you might have to tinker with. For example changing both to MAIL.COMCAST.NET

The domain you can just leave blank.

Options.....

Options page 1/3

I would not check this box for checking for messages every X# of minutes. If you are not online you will get an error message every X# of minutes.

Next....

Options Page 2/3

Here I checked the box for "Outgoing mail requiers authentication" as well as "Use separate settings"

Outgoing Settings....

Outgoing server settings

For username here I had to use my entire email address. This was very different then the rest of the set up.

Enter your password

Leave the domain blank

Check the box for save password

Check the box for "Require SSL for outgoing mail

Click OK in the upper right corner

Next....

Options page 3/3

In order to save space I would select "Get message headers only"

Check the box marked include and select 2K

Finish....

Thanks so much for this

I am able to use the internet while the PDA is not in the cradle - that part works - it was just the e-mail function. I'll go through all those steps again and check what I did compared with your suggestions.

Thanks for the comprehensive response

Cheers

All the info so far is about POP3 accounts. If you are using hotmail or msn.com (non pop3) account then you need something like HTTPMail for messaging to work. Search the site for some good posts. Mine (msn hotmail type account) works great over wireless today in a free WiFi Holiday Inn room.

I had mine working fine originally, however since going to A02 I can no longer get email over the wireless, though web browsing works fine. Alls fine over Bluetooth to GPRS phone though. Seems the wireless setup is a little screwed on mine now, could be something similer. If I work it out I'll let you know.

Got mine up and running again. Had to change wireless settings to be 'open' rather than 'shared'

If you are able to send but not receive then it is in the mail settings. Look above at the steps I listed and play close attention to the area around here~

Options Page 2/3

Here I checked the box for "Outgoing mail requiers authentication" as well as "Use separate settings"

Outgoing Settings....

Outgoing server settings

For username here I had to use my entire email address. This was very different then the rest of the set up.

Leave the domain blank

Check the box for save password

Check the box for "Require SSL for outgoing mail

Next....

9/10 times this is the problem. Good Luck~

This thread was very helpful. I was having problems sending email. I did a search and found this thread and fixed my problem. I had to check the box for "Outgoing mail requiers authentication" and my problem was resolved. Thank for the help. This is why I love this site. :)

Thanks for all the info

but ... still not working (maybe its me!). Will check the firmware issue out. Its soo wierd that everything works just fine when the PDA is in the cradle. Internet works fine when the PDA is out of the cradle. Its just messaging that does not work when the PDA is out of the cradle.

Thanks anyway

Regards

Andrea

Here is my problem.

I go to messaging and then to accounts.

There is already an Outlook E-Mail account there. This seems to display my email that it Synced with the computer.

However I can edit this account. So If I create a New account called say Rogers Email and set its POP/SMTP etc.. then I can send an email and recieve aswell.

do I have to have both these accounts there? I hate having to switch between them. Cause when Not in the cradle the Outlook E-Mail Account does not send or recieve. so I have to switch to the Rogers account.

Makes replying to an email difficult.

Thanks

That is how it works. The Outlook E-Mail account you see there is for just what you said syncing email form your desktop to the Axim. The reason is because after your desktop downloads the message and it is in your desktop outlook it is no longer on the email server. So you can't download it again with your pop3 account. So if you want to check email via wi-fi (that has not already been downloaded by your desktop) you have to set up a seperate pop3 account. Sounds silly but it works well.

I have mine set up NOT to sync the outlook email account. Because I have no interest in email that my desktop has already gotten for me. When I go out with my Axim. My desktop is shutdown (or outlook closed) so it is not getting my email anymore. Then I use wi-fi and my POP3 account on my Axim to check email. Nice thing here (for me anyway) is the POP3 settings will not delete email form the server (like desktop outlook does). So even if I have checked my email on the Axim. When I get home and start my desktop outlook I get the same emails again. I like this because sometimes the emails I get are too big, have alot of pictures, or maybe some attachments in them and my Axim does not do a great job of showing them.

Hope that helps! Good Luck~
