Can't activate Microsoft Reader

When I try to activate my Microsoft Reader it tells me that I have an old version of the operating system and that I need a version 2002 or later. But my version is Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition.
Also the Reader is working fine apart from Activation. Any suggestions please?

I have the same problem as you when trying to activate it...
Does anyone know if MS Reader can be normally used without the activation?

This problem is described in This Thread.

Install the latest 2.4 version. Install it to Main Memory (the Windows folder), Activate it and the transfer it to BIS, (to save Main Memory space), using Resco Explorer 2003 cut and paste.

I first removed the older version from activesync install list AND my pc , then installed new version. That worked.

Forgive the archaeology, but finding this thread put me in the right direction. Incidentally, if you install reader to the device default, activate, then uninstall from the device (uncheck, not Remove), and finally reinstall (recheck) to the SD card, the activation remains in place. The only drawback is that you need to recreate the shortcut -- a very small price to pay.

I am also unable to activate it so far.

What do you gain by activation? I have been using mine for several months now and it seems to work fine.

Activation is really only necessary if you are reading books that you paid for. They will not open unless reader activated (and you can't redownload them from many of the secure sites unless you have an activated version of reader on your pc). It is the stupidest copy protection scheme I have ever seen. I have exceeded the maximum number of activations simply because I have purchased and upgraded a few pocket pc's, notebooks, and pcs. Trying to get extra activations is like trying to pull teeth from a live shark.

Everytime I did a hard reset I had to renew MS Reader activation.ThenI copied activation file from windows and placed it in my documents folder in BIS.Now I do not have to go thru activation after hard reset. Also if you are using SK Tools you can make a backup of MS Reader activation and place it on any storage card.

Do you have to reactivate when you upgrade?

If your hardware changes, activation needs to be run again as the old files no longer work. It shouldn't happen with a rom upgrade. Backing up the activation files works fine if you are hard resetting your device but according to MS, you can still reactivate then without using up one of your activations. The main problem arises when you purchase another pocket pc. For me, I tend to go through a couple of motherboards a year; a new pocket pc every year; and I also have a laptop. Three times in the past year I have been forced to beg for extra activations and they only gave them to me once. After that, I converted my DRM-protected .lit files and have now given up on .lit. I only purchase mobipocket format books now.
