Nifty Tweek I found.. Repost? I dono.

Anyway I Found this nifty tweek today from another post that really seamed to speed up my axim a bit.

Speed Up Your Windows Mobile Pocket PC.

WOW my Pocket PC is fast! I just bumped into an old registry tweak that I have yet to use o*n Windows Mobile 2003. A foreign site todopocketpc had mentioned this and I was surprised I had not used it o*n my new install. o*nce I applied this reg tweak I immediately saw a difference in how fast my Windows Mobile Pocket PC responded. Today plugins load faster my Games folder loads faster. Its just an overall better experience. I would highly suggest backing up your Pocket PC before you try this as playing with your registry can cause problems if you do not know what you are doing. Protect your Pocket PC BACKUP!

If you need a registry editor, you can find a free o*ne at http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/regeditce.shtml

1. Open your registry editor o*n your Pocket PC
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
3. Change the value of 'limit' from 8192 to 32768
4. Close registry editor and soft reset.

The tip came from http://www.purepockets.com/modules.p...es&id_cat=6#26

This is one of the first reg tweeks I have liked. Tweak2k seams to mess up my PDA every time I go and try it but eh maby Ill give it another wack for tweaking sake lol. Still nifty tweak indeed. The start menu seams to open a tad faster and it overall seams a tad more spunky.

Is this the same as the MemMaid font cache size option?

My x30 was already sat to 32768...I know this is in the x50 forum, but does that mean that Dell purposely did something to make the x50s perform slightly slower? Maybe to save battery life or something...

You are 100% right. There is definitely significant improvement in performance speed.

I think this thiread should be a sticky so that all axim users can benefit from this.

I wonder. Setting it to 32768 is 4X the stock setting. Can you set it higher like to 49152 (6X) or 65536 (8X) Does it perform any faster or will it start having. Guess Ill try and find out heh.

*:After Test:* I dono. It doesnt seam to get any faster after 32768. It does however seam to have a slightly less hard time switching from one menu to the other in the start menu with wisbar advanced 2 installed. Not sure if my eyes are playing tricks or whatnot since im quite tired but i think ill leave it at 49152 and see how it does elseware. Some of you others test these speeds out and see if they are better or worse than the 32768.

I don't notice any speed increase... mine was set to 16384 already...I'm guessing picard's gdi+ tool did that or something... Someone should figure out if this drains the battery a lil faster or something.

Sounds like it does what the clear type "Tweak-it!" does, it loads up application faster. Why mess with the Reg. when you have a software that does that?. And its free

software or not its not a hard tweak. But paired with the tweaks2k2 speed up display tweak (like the only tweak Ill touch in that program) it seams to speed everything up quite nicely.

It shaved off 6 seconds from my boot up after soft-reset with both Pocket Plus and Pocket Breeze turned on. Very nice. Thanks for the tip!

The value increases the cache for pre-defined font styles, which means that if an app requests a font with a specific height, weight, and effects it will be stored in the cache until it is no longer needed.

The benefit with the larger cache is that more fonts can be stored at any one time and therefore less requests to the OS for a specific font.

I would also speculate that the reason increasing past 32768 has no effect is that if 32768 holds for example 10 fonts and the os never uses more than 10 at any one time you'll never see any benefit with a bigger cache.

Anyways, hope this helps :)

32768 is a limit of a 16 bit processor. This is the highest number it can count to without doing some funky work arounds.

It probably ignores anything higher than that.
