Path when installing to SD Card?

Hi,

I've just hard reset my device so that I can install all programs to my SD card,
the problem is that ActiveSync gives me the option "Save in:" -> "SD Card",
but when I press OK, the program goes to the root of the SD card, such as
\SD Card\MemMaid, I want to install all programs to \SD Card\Program Files\,
such as \SD Card\Program Files\MemMaid.

Is this possible with activesync?

Best Regards,
Christopher H.

PS. Quick assistance highly appreciated, I'm trying to solve this right now.

I have found the solution and I'm posting it below. I truly think
this thread should be a sticky, since I am sure a lot of people have just
accepted that programs on their SD/CF card installs to the root folder.

There is a way around it, read below:

Here are the instructions, it's actually much easier than I thought it would be.

1. Open ActiveSync on your Desktop PC, then go to Tools -> Add/Remove Programs. Uncheck the "Install program into the default installation folder" option.
2. Use a registry editor on the Pocket PC (PHM Registry is a free one, google for it), then locate the following key:
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Application Installer\
3. Change the value of 'fAskDest' to '1' (without quotes).
4. Create a "Program Files" folder on your SD Card. If you have a "My Documents" folder on the SD Card, make sure that you have the ignore_my_docs file in the root drive of the SD Card or you won't be able to select the "Program Files" folder when installing.
5. Install the program through ActiveSync on your Desktop PC. When asked if you want to install to the default location, click No. Then select "SD Card" from the dropdown list. This will merely copy the install CAB over to the root of the SD Card. Once the copy is complete, a "Save As" dialogue will appear on the Pocket PC screen. Select the SD Card and the folder "Program Files", the program will then be installed to the \SD Card\Program Files\ folder.

What the hack does is that it changes the behaviour of CAB files on the pocket pc from automatic install, to asking where they should be installed. This also means that for those of you using "cabinstall" (a freeware program) to let you manually choose a installation directory, can use this registry hack instead to always be asked where to install the CAB file contents.

Best Regards,
Christopher H.

If you have the cab file you can use this freeware program:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pocketpc/cabinst.html

If you've download the .exe setup file, here's what you can do:
Run the .exe file with your PDA not attached. (it will say it will sync it the next time it's attached).
Go to: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Activsync\program name and you will see the cab file.
Copy that file somewhere else and delete the folder.
Next time you sync, use windows explorer and copy the cab file onto the PDA and use cabinst to do the rest.

Yes, I knew about that method and it's too much work,
especially when installing 30-40 applications. Read
the solution in my previous post. Thank you!

Christopher H.
