thinking about getting a mp3 player or pocket media player
hi guys, im seriously thinking about buying a mp3 player, or a portable media center...i know my x50v can handle all this but the battery life really blows on the x50v...everything else it handles great...also a reason why i would opt for a pmc device is because ithink it doesn't convert video as long as it takes my x50v to do the same thing...it takes me nearly 2-4 hours just 2 convert a dvd or movie file to the x50v...i heard that pmc just transfers it like a file...please some1 correct me if im wrong...
Let us know your choice and share your experience with an MP3. I can't argue the battery charge doesn't last long enough. I don't have your issue as I never uses it more than 1-2 hours at the time.

You still have to do some kind of conversion or capture process to get video onto a PMC, so it won't really save you any time that way. The battery life of most PMCs probably isn't a lot better than an Axim's when it comes to video, either. They would definitely have an edge in the storage department, though.
Personally, I don't watch movies on the go enough to justify a separate device, so I just use my Axim for that and my iPod for music.
The only advantage is storage. Most PMCs have 320x480 res, you STILL have to convert and the conversion process takes just as long. The battery life is roughly the same or slightly better.

wow, now that just made my mind on buying a pmc device...i totally agree with you that it doesn't justify since i probably wont be using it alot...i also didn't know that the conversion process takes as long as what i do with x50v...i guess i'll just buy a mp3 player since i listen to music all the time...almost 4 hours a day to be exact...movies probably once a week...
uhmm since all of you seem to say the same thing about the conversion process, do any of you own one to make the assertion that it takes as long converting to a x50v as well using pocketdivxencoder or any other program?? i was under the assumption that pmc was made so its faster and easier to transfer videos on the go...
uhh ok, while i was doing a search on this site, i saw that some1 said mp3 players CANT be used at high altitudes, ex. a plane...thats scary since i am planning to go out of the country on vacation and i am buying either a creative zen micro or iriver h10 for this purpose...that would really suck if it doesn't work in the air, or it breaks down...
"Can't be used at high altitudes"?! That's nuts.
So, all those people on the airplane with headphones on are listening to white noise?
Just for grins, can you post a link to that comment? Even in the gravity-free vacuum of outerspace I imagine a flash-based MP3 player should play...of course, then the question is, can you hear music in a vacuum?

He's talking about not using HDD-based players at high altitudes (above 10,000 feet) because the lower air pressure could cause the hard drive head to "crash" onto the platter.
An airplane is a pressurized environment, so there's no problem with using an mp3 player there. (Unless there's a breach in the cabin, in which case you've got bigger problems anyway. :))

Your video has to be encoded to a format the PMC can use. Video encoding is a time-consuming process if you want decent results, whether the final product is going to be used on a PDA, a PMC, a laptop, or whatever.

well it actually makes sense...you know that thing that pops in your ear when you are about to life off and about to land??...i guess its when you start to fly and start to land that you should turn it off...the pressure in the plane cabin stableizes while your in the air so thats when its safe to turn it on...i did confirm with my teacher and he said its true...hard drives have some sort of mechanism to stabalize the pressure from outside to in the drive itself...
There's at least one PMC that records directly from your TV. I'll find the link shortly. But PMC are in their infancy yet. Love that storage space though,
Here's where it gets tricky. A PVR is what you want not a PMC athoutgh a PVR with the PMC OS would be cool. Look at this one. Archos AV420
