*Sigh* Wanting to return my Axim x50v

Hey guys, I got my Axim thinking it was going to be great and all, but I was actually disappointed with it. How would I go about returning it, and would it cost me any money besides shipping?

I believe if you're within your first 21 days (check with Dell to be sure) then you are able to return it without much hassle (although I have heard talk about restocking fees but am not sure if it spplies in your case). After that then your best bet will be to sell it.

What exactly are you disappointed with? Keep in mind that there is often a steep learning curve with PPCs (even for those who feel comfortable with PCs in general) and that we're here to help. :)

Oh its definitely not confusing to me at all. Its just more or less, the versatility of it so to speak. I dont know hat to do with it actually. I mean yeah, an expensive MP3 player, and some games, and an organizier, but what else can it do, ya know? I spent 509 bucks thinking there would be alot to do with it.

I mean, I guess maybe I havent explored whats out there enough, but what else can it do?

Or if I may ask this, why did you get yours?

I guess you have not yet read my tutorial, "What Can I Do With My Axim?" ;) (link is in my signature)

As for me personally, I got mine because I love toys and I am not afraid to try out new things, even at the expense of lots of hard resets :hide: I use mine for the following:

Internet/IM via wifi and BT (BT via cell phone)
PIM
Multimedia
GPS
Transferring files to/from BT cell phone
Networking/access to my PC via VNC/logmein

I'm also learning more about streaming from my tv tuner card, but haven't quite mastered it yet. :)

To find out what you can do with it have a look at the tutorial "What can I do with my.."

It is linked in my MyDPA on the left.

(EDIT: beaten by Gigi :nw: )

You sure picked the right place to ask these questions. :)
There is a link in Gigi's signature above - "What can I do with my Axim?". Lots of good suggestions there. Also take a look at bondr006's MyPDA.

EDIT: Beaten by Gigi AND rob1303! You've got to be quick around here!

And another thing, well, maybe I dont need it, Im 16 and I go to school, right now I use it for keeping track of my homework, and music here and there. I would like ot use it for emulating SNES games, but the controls are tedius and better for RPGs. I was also hoping that there was some type of external controller or something where I can use my console controllers. I was just maybe looking for a little more.

Here's another link to stuff you can do with PDA's. Not axim specific, but it's still a good read.

this is my first ppc as well and i have to say - im loving it

i really bought it first and foremost as an alternative to my laptop when im on the road - especially on roadtrips - i love being able to access the internet via either wifi or bt and my cellphone - with orb.com - i can even stream live tv (my local channels) wherever in the world i am in addition to all of my mp3s, divx files, and photos

i too was thinking that maybe it was an expensive "toy" - then i learned (from this wonderful site) that i could also use it as a gps device - my gps unit should be coming in tomorrow so i havent actually tested it out yet but from what i hear - its fabulous - i was actually considering buying one of those portable gps receivers for myself but for less money - ill have a gps as well as this awesome ppc

the way i look at it is this - for a total of about $600 usd i have a great pda, internet access device, streaming media player, gaming device, and gps unit all in one bundled, attractive package

i know its not cheap per se - but if you were to purchase a media player, gaming device, and gps device - i can guarantee that youll spend at least twice that much money...

just my two schillings! :D

I kinda feel the same as John, I got the x50v for a month now, it offers much more than my 4 years old Sony Clie. But well, I am getting kinda tired of the wifi + BT problem for the Axim. And no one can have a solution yet...

Hmm ... well it sounds like you haven't spent enough time with your device just yet. PPC's are incredibly powerful devices but I understand what you're talking about - you're trying to find "something to do" with it. You probably bought it out of curiosity more than anything else. When you got it the device had fairly basic programs on it - nothing particularly amazing in itself - after all, at your age (you said you were 16) you've had PC's around, in one form or another, all your life. Once you've opened up Pocket Word, Excel and a few other things you probably said "OK ... so what?"

The real power of a Pocket PC (in my opinion) is it's flexibility and customizability. IOW - it becomes a device eliminator. If you view your Axim as way to eliminate and centralize things you begin to realize how powerful the thing really is.

I got into PPC's originally when they started to appear about 5 or 6 years ago - out of curiosity at first. Having developed software for 25 years I was curious to see how much capability could be had in device that I could carry in my pocket. It was a "dream" of mine to be able to bring with me the ability to write programs wherever I was. Man ... these devices not only provide that capability but far more.

My device (an X50-Mid) has become a major device eliminator. I use it for:

- Bible Study. Incredibly powerful - with a full-text search-engine I can cross-reference the scriptures, read and all the rest. I don't hardly use a paper volume anymore.
- Word-processing/Journaling. I have been keeping a detailed journal for about 11 years now. Having word-processing on-tap in my pocket has been a real boon to me; any time I want to write something down about what I'm thinking or what's going on it's all right there. With the advent of the high-density memory we have now, I can keep all 11 years of my journal with me all the time. To me that's pretty incredible.
- Contact / Task / Appointments: Having the PPC makes this a completely done deal. I no longer use a "DayTimer", paper calendar or "little black book" The Axim is the ultimate "little black book"
- Programming: With a copy of NSBasic handy I can dash off a quick little utility program any time I want to. This was an absolute dream to me as a programmer.
- General Reading: I just discovered MS Reader not long ago and a wealth of free books online. I just read a novel - something I haven't done in YEARS. I have several books that I've wanted to read over the years in my pocket all the time now that I have this Axim.
- Calculator: I can now get rid of all the calculators I own. I found a terrific programmable (Just like an HP on steroids) that runs great on my Axim. Another item I don't have to carry around.
- Database: With DBAnywhere on the device I can now set up databases to keep track of any kind of information I need to and present it back to myself as I need. Wowzer.
- Games: I don't spend a lot of time gaming - never have, but one game (Virtual Pool Mobile) is my consistent favorite.
- Movies/Music: I'm not into this all that much - but I'm tinkering with it. I just put a 1GB CF card in there so I can stash some favorites to listen to. The jury is out on whether or not I'll make much use of that capability but it's pretty cool that you CAN do that.

Altogether, John, I probably have $700 or so (between all the software I've purchased, extra battery, etc.) in my Axim. Expensive toy? Yeah - it is, but considering the amount of use I get out of the thing it's pretty cheap. Will that be the case for you? That all depends. At 16-years-old I wasn't in need of all that much "organization" yet either. I would probably have gone bonkers if such a device had been available to me then - but no such animal yet existed. I was into photography and cameras back then. Those were my "toys" at the time.

Sorry to write a book - I guess I just wanted to figure out by telling you what the device has done for me how indespensable it has become. At this point I'd probably survive without it - but it sure has turned out to be a utility to me.

By way of advise? Keep your Axim. Don't try to "figure out" something to do with it. Unless you can get a full refund on it, you will have wasted money to get rid of it (consumer electronics are a notoriously bad investment if you don't use them). Treat your Axim like a good book - it will be there when you need it. Start by just using it to read or something. Put MSReader on there, turn off the TV and go read. Get a calculator program and use it when you do your Math. Start organizing your schedule a bit with the calendar. I think you'll find it will grow to become a really useful item.
