Suddenly: Can't explore my device!!!

Hi y'all...
Just bought my first Dell X50v. First impression: NICE DEVICE!
But suddenly I can't explore my device from ActiveSync in Windows XP?!? I got the darn PDA monday - now 4 days later it won't work. I can install new programs and sync my calender etc. but not explore my device and put music and pics on it.

PLZ help me... Could some upgrade fix this maybe?

Thanx in advance :approve:

Have you tried a soft reset?

Does your device not appear when you press the explore button? What exactly is happening?

Yes, try a soft reset.

What was the last thing you installed on your PDA and you PC? Did you update any firewall software?

Cheers

Hey AK. Thanx for the quick response.
I tried both a soft and a hard reset. The last software I installed was Snails (the game you know), and before that Adobe Reader 2002 for PPC.
I dont remeber the error message exactly but I think it goes a little like this:"...critial error. Try resetting your device."
When I press Explore in ActiveSync a window opens, but nothing is in it. The window is called "Mobile Device".

Looking forward to your response.

Very strange. I presume even after the hard reset it is still doing it. Which means it is porbably something wiht your PC.

Try unpluging the cradle, reboot and plug it back in.

If that doesn't work, unplug the cradle, uninstall activesync, reboot, reinstall activesync 3.8 and resetup your partnership.

Did you do anything on your PC lately that might affect drivers or communications? Install software maybe antivirus?

Cheers

Hmm Hey AK

Nope. Didn't install anything on my PC.

But I thought that I'd might have to uninstall the whole damn thing. Dammit. Gonna try and do it all over later.
If that don't work, I'm sure I'm gonna scream :rolling:

I'll write back to tell you how it went...

Ok good luck.

Welcome to axim site by the way. I only just noticed your post count :)

I'd be suprised if that doesn't work. If it doesn't you could always try installing activesync 4, even though it is a beta release it will contain new drivers so the old one will have to be overwritten.

Cheers

Maybe just re-installing Active-Sync might do the trick.

I had a similar problem with a Palm device awhile back. I used to be able to connect to Windows Explorer and browse the contents of the unit/SD card, but one day it just stopped recognizing it in Windows. Turned out to be my WinXP installation, although I don't think I did anything to make it happen. After a WinXP reload, it worked fine again...go figure.

Fixed it!!!

Hi everybody. And thanx for all your good advice during my crises.

The problem WAS the firewall. It turns out my girlfriend was using my computer yesterday, and she asked the firewall to block the PDA file explorer.
All in all it was my own fault because I've told her ALWAYS to press BLOCK whenever the firewall appears.

Women - can't live with them... If they mess up your computer :laugh

And so ends my first fairytale with an error on my new Axim X50v. Hopefully the last too! (I wish :) )

Thanx for your advice...

Next time give her her own user account to log in. You never know what might go wrong next.

Come to think of it, it may have been the firewall as well on my end. Perhaps I accidentally blocked it, didn't know I did, and when I did the re-install of Windows and the firewall I didn't block it and it worked fine. This should definitely be noted somewhere (if it is not already) in case others have this problem down the road.
