x50v Linux pptp and Samba

Any ideas folks?
Have a home based Linux box with static IP that I can VPN into and use a Samba share from the internet using a variety of win2k or winXP boxes I can remote desktop from a win2K or XP box too.
Not so lucky on my x50v. From a public WiFi site I can VPN into the box (verified by looking at the log files) but I cannot see my Samba shares! - I have tried the native file explorer and Resco too - same difference. I cannot Terminal Services either.
Here's the wierd part... I have the trial version of PocketLan and it can scan my home boxes once I have VPNed into the network, but it cannot see the shares either! I can ping the boxes fine!
If I'm on my home lan then I 'vpn' and everything works
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions - I'm pretty tech savy, but this one has me stumped - How can I be sure that the resco/file explorer/TSC are using the VPN connection and not the lan connection.
I've read the tutorials and the FAQ - but in M$ effort to make the darn thing 'user friendly' they have made it almost impossible to understand their terminology.
Sorry for the long winded post and thanks for your time.

Sometimes netbios broadcasts do not pass well through pptp VPN and you need to use the IP address of the box you want to connect to instead of its name when mapping shares. Depends on how you configured it.
Try the same with a wifi laptop and see if it works.

Thanks for the suggestion, but been there done that - I can connect fine with a wifi laptop at a public hotspot and VPN into my Lan, I see the shares and can map them.
On the PPC I can with some effort see the machines behind the VPN (using PocketLan) but cannot connect or see the shares - I've tried by IP address and machine name.
Any recommendations on "LAN" software besides PocketLan?
come on guys... you're the clever ones! :)

Look in smbd.log and nmbd.log for clues. Also there should be a per machine log. Resco Explorer does drive mapping.
If everything else fails, tcpdump is your friend.

Search around the forums and found out there is a bug in Samba 3.0.x. Put "use spnego = no" in smb.conf it works. but subsequent reconnects will require a password.

Thanks ALOT for that, I had concluded that Samba and PocketPC's just don't play nice but that got it working for me :D

I did the spnego = no setting and that allowed the x50v to connect while on the local lan (through wifi) but the problem is the PN connection through Poptop - again, I can see the machine - just can't map the drive - will keep playing til I find a way!
