I used my usb sync today. When i placed the x50v in the cradle my computer shut down then when i restarted the computer my 2 usb ports now dont recognize anything. Does anyone know how to fix this or did i cook my usb ports? The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop.
This could be a case of the Axim drawing too much power from the USB port. Someone has made note of this here before, but I didn't think it was that big of a problem.
I would check to make sure that this is true by first checking the usb ports with another device.
Also make sure that it did not just uninstall them...right click on My Computer, go to Device Manager, and see if your USB ports are listed there under USB

Well it appears that they are cooked! So i had a PCI card that has 2 usb ports. So i put the PCI card in and i know have 2 working usb ports but the 2 on the back on my laptop are cooked. Well at least i can still use my mouse etc etc. We all know what a nightmare Dell CS is so i wont even bother dealing with them. I also set up my wireless syncing today so no more cradles being hooked up to my laptop.
I had a problem when I attempted hooking up my 50v with extended battery to my Dell laptop with sync cable only. I forget if the warning message state that there was to much voltage being applied to my usb port or if it was to much being drawn from the port. Otherwise with the std battery it works fine. I didn't go to the bother of hooking up the cradle to the laptop. After hearing the reported problems I avoid hooking it up to my laptop.

I checked them with a few different devices and i also did the device manager check. They are cooked.
It is either in here somewhere or on the Dell Axim forums, but you should be able to find it. I remember at least one case where Dell replaced the motherboard on the laptop with the cooked usb ports. You might want to contact them. Be sure to do it via "chat" rather then over the phone though. My experience with Dell chat has been excellent.
Hi, I am one of the unlucky people to have had my usb ports fried by the Axim. My pc is a Dell Dimension 8300 (still under the guarantee :) , and after several HOURS on support with the Philipines and India it was decided that my ports were fried. Dell sent someone to my home to replace the motherboard. Now I only sync wirelessly. If the new sync doesn't included wireless sync, I won't upgrade, as I don't want to go through support again! Good luck. Painterly

Yes i agree if the new update dosent include wireless then i will be staying with the current one also. I will never put another usb cradle on my laptop. This is my bread and butter this laptop.I'm also under warranty with dell but i really dont have the time or the patience to deal with them. So like i said in my previous post i will contimue to use my PCI card that gives me 2 usb ports and call it a day.
why? dell chat is very fast! they replace my axim right away after i say their tests dont work
Because my laptop is my work computer i dont have the time to give up my pc to have a new mother board replaced just to have 2 usb ports replaced that i dont really need anyway i have 2 on my PCI card.

that will also kill your re-sale value should you ever try to sell the laptop. it would be worth having them fix it now under warranty. As far as the wifi sync goes, somehow we need to get this idea accross to MS that it needs to be OUR option instead of THEIR option whether or not we want to have that level of security. What don't they get? Very frustrating.

I understand what your saying about resale but i dont sell my computers they get handed down to one of my children:)Like i said this computer makes me money every day. I just cant even think about going without a computer for god knows how long it is at dell. I wish i had the same warranty i have with my x50v (advance exchange) then i would have no problem. So the moral of this story is. DONT USE USB SYNC with your computer. Thank god i have a PCI card and an empty PCI card slot so i was able to replace the 2 i lost.
I was one of the most recent posters with a fried motherboard. Check the top of this forum for the "lethal cradle poll". Dell sent me a new motherboard for my 5150 notebook and I installed it myself, but it was under warranty and I happen to be DCSE certified.
IMNSHO, you should report the issue to Dell anyway. They seem to be ignoring this very common and serious problem and the more times it's reported, the better chance we have of them doing something about it. I posted a thread in their forums about it, but it's been totally ignored by Dell's people.
