inquiries RE: SE_VGA, ozVGA, and PocketInformant

hi all...

in a couple of days - i would be getting my Axim x50v, and of course, based on the posts around here (and other boards), i would like to take FULL advantage of its VGA capabilities...

thus, though im not that NEWBIE to the PPC; please allow me some few questions/inquiries:
note: i have tried searching through the threads but couldnt somehow find what i was looking for, so if you find the questions redundant, my apologies...
  • i hear that the top VGA hacks are ozVGA, and SE_VGA - so, which is better? which do you prefer? and why?
  • is there any tutorial for any of this hacks? ive been google-ing with "SE_VGA," for example, and couldnt come up with any site, etc.
  • i have heard that SE_VGA (or any other VGA hack) doesnt seem to work with PocketInformant - is this true? if this were the case, assuming that the VGA hack is global to all applications; i would need to disable it when im using PI, and enable it when it need VGA (ie., PIE, for example)? what are your workarounds?
to all, thanks!!!

I don't use OzVGA, but I understand that it allows more functionality. With SE_VGA, it is a simple program in that it only forces your PC in and out of "True VGA". I have PI and SE_VGA and have no problems.

PS: thanks for the reply...

Pi works fine in true Vga mode, you should read this thread from the begin.

External calendar cannot be use in PI 5:

But works fine with PI 6:

How did you get it to show the small icons (non-VGA icons) in pure VGA mode? I've been trying to figure that out.

Yeah the icons won't show up right for me in true vga. I wish I knew how to get that working right.

I personally prefer ozVGA. This program allows you to switch back to the regular "VGA", allows you to set the font size, text size that you want to display in true VGA, etc.

I tried SE_VGA, but for some odd reason my X50v used to get hung more frequently and I had to a soft reset more often. Most probably it must be due to some conflict between some other programs that I have on my Axim, since I know that there are lots of people who have been using SE_VGA without any problem. Anyways, after installing ozVGA, I haven't encountered any more problems.

You should read the thread linked in my previous post. It explains about the two PIResources.dll. Depending the mode you are using when you'll install PI. If you are in Standard SE the PIResources.dll will embed Larger HiRes icons. However if you are installing from True Vga mode the PIResources.dll will embed the small icons, also you should take a modified version of this dll if you want to get Larger dialog box for True Vga mode.

This should make your choice easier as only ozVGA is able to handle different dll depending on the VGA mode you are using, you could configure it two use the proper PIResources.dll at each switch.

Try both then... and see which you prefer (they both do the same thing anyway, Oz just has some extra tweaking options)
