Help-how to add program shortcut to desktop without 3rd party program?
Hi gentlemen,
I am a new one for x50v, and would like to know whether any professionals can give me an answer? thank you at advance. I meant I want to add programe shortcut into the desktop of the ppc, and I do not like to install those third party desktop plugins because I like to keep my pda clean enough for the best performance. would anyone like to answer me? I think this can be done since those orignal desktop shortcuts in 2003se are just there and staying fine, so what i need to do? I quess this will concern something about register table...but do not know how. I know this question is just a little too much professional, but I am expecting an expert coming in and give me a path...thank you very much at advance.
Andy

yes, I think so...but do not know where to edit...or maybe this question can be asked by another way: how we can edit the desktop shortcuts on PC with only registry editing? I think the resolution shold be very similar. Can anyone help?

I have searched internet and now got a way to do so....but the original issuer said it was for Smartphone with MS 2003 OS, I think things should be the same with in x50v...I can not make this test myself since my 50v is still on its shipping way. OK...now it is the solution:
1. you need to have a registry editor..it is everywhere just get one.
2. Find this in registry:
A:software\microsoft\shell\startmenu\order
b:.....\startmru\initialorder
3.You will find some lnk key value in above place, so just to delete/add as what you want. You also need to find those original lnk files here:storage\windows\start menu. In above...A is for changing the order of those program shortcuts in START menu, and so B is for what to be listed in your desktop.
Since I have no ppc in hand to try it, so I am not sure if this will work or not...I think it will since this is a simple stuff...let me know if you got any questions or problems.

Also....if you need to place a shortcut..as we all know you can first only put it in START menu....for those GREEN softwares wherever the programs are in...SD..ROM etc...you need to just locate the program by file explorer first and then copy it and then go to windows/Startmenu folder and then paste it, so that you will find the shortcut has been in start menu, and then do it as you like to.
Hope this helpful for you guys. have a happy experience with your PPC..hehe....i am waitting for mine and....waitting is always a so long period..no matter for a girl or PPC.

I am sorry to break this to you, but that registry tweak is for Smartphone devices, not PPC. The only way to get shortcuts on the desktop (Today screen) is by installing and running today screen plug-ins. You can, however, customize the Start Menu with links to any of your installed programs. There is a limit to the number of start menu items you can have; I beleive the maximum is 9 (at least for WM2k3).

since the other posts already say you can't put in shortcuts on the desktop, if u do end up using a plug-in (although u'd rather not) i'd recommend spd pocket plus, i've used it for months now and i haven't noticed any difference in the speed of my axim, plus it's got a ton of extra features that are really useful (multiple IE windows, customize the x to close or minimize, estimated battery runtime, shortcuts, etc etc etc, it's great)

I use Launcher its freeware and its tiny. It wont take hardly any space in your main. It is exactly what your looking for. All you have to do is install it then put shortcuts to all the progs you want on the today screen in the launcher folder and they are on your today screen no tabs like SPB,its simple. I dont like tab programs like SPB because its just another tap that i feel is not needed. You can get Launcher at any pocket pc freeware site. I have included a screenshot for you to take a look at it.

To customize the menu you are allow 7 shortcuts buy going to settings>munus and clicking the one you want. However there is a way to add more if you have the space or are using vga hack. Use an explorer to goto the windows/start menu/ folder cut or copy the shortcut from the programs folder on lever up to this folder and you can add more. I created folders on this level for Mobile Office, Multimedia, Internet and put the appropriate shortcuts there and you can use them like "Programs", and "Setting" in the start menu. This works very well with wisbar as I can easily find and use any of my programs from the start menu without opening any folders.

Cascading menus is not part of WM2003SE. You have Wisbar installed, and therefore lets you do that. The original poster doesn't want third party apps.

I know but what I was trying to deminstrate was that I was able to get more then 7 items on the start menu. And by putting them into folders you can find them qickier then having them in "Programs"
