FTP Only works Through VPN

Hello All,

I am having a problem Connecting Directly to my FTP Server. I have a Server set up behind a Router with Port 21 forwarded to it and I can get in with FTP on my XP Laptop directly but I can't get in using My X50..... Directly. If I VPN into the system that the FTP Server is on (Win 2k Adv Server with TERM SVCs, Webserver, FTP Server, VPN Server) I can FTP directly into it using the VPN IP Gateway address (the Address the Server Assigns to my VPN Connection is .3.3 so I FTP to .3.1 and I connect) with no problems. I can't believe it is the port Forwarding on the router since Web services, Terminal Services, and VPN ports are all forwarded with no issues.

Not that it should matter because FTP works over an Established VPN but I'm using CE File Commander. IF it was File commander, It shouldn't work in either instance.

Any Ideas?

so the X50 will work only if tunneled through VPN. Does the XP machine work remotely?

With Any FTP Client on Win XP/9x I can Access the Server without a VPN tunnel or through an open tunnel.

The Axim will only FTP Through the tunnel. It's like it doesn't like the Port Forwarding of the router for FTP only. Port forwarding on the webserver/terminal Server/VPN Authentication server all work fine. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe there is another port on the router that I need to open for this client and the tunnel gives me full availability to all ports through the router.

FTP on a PPC doesn't require VPN.

Have you tried any other FTP client software? I've used both vxftp (www.cam.com) and Resco's file explorer built-in FTP with zero problems directly.

This was noted on CE commander's website (maybe still a problem?):

Ø FTP code is rewritten (without using winInet) for Pocket PC 2002 to fix the following Pocket PC 2002 bug:
"You cannot access FTP sites (either through IE or through WiniNet) that require username/password. This worked in Pocket PC, and always transmits anonymous now on Pocket PC 2002.”

I'd also double check your router's filters. What brand are you using?

I've got a Linksys Router with port 21 Forwarded. I know that is working because I can get in via my PC.

If the port forwarding was an issue, wouldn't HTTP, VPN, & RDP all have problems as well since they are just ports that are forwarded too?

My FTP Server Requires Username and PW to login and since I can log in on the AXIM through the tunnel I can't imagine it is the CF Commander. (The problem you stated says it always authenticates with Anony. and I can Auth with My UN&PW)....

But only through my VPN.

I put my Server in the DMZ for a few min and still, no deal.

I'm thinking its time to try another program to see if that fixes it. Anyone know of any Free ones? I'm getting married in less than two weeks and since I have a work-around (VPN Tunnel) I can't justify spending any money on it.

Here's a free one: Orneta FTP

The only other thing I can think of is a set filter on your router blocking your X50 or a DNS issue. Do you have a static IP to the router?

Technically, I have a Dynamic IP but it hasn't changed in about a year and a half so basically it's a Static IP. If I try and Hit the IP of the router Directly..... Same Deal. Can get in with the XP Laptop but not with the Axim.

Quite Puzzling....
