Communicating with another X50v

My colleague has a X50v same as me. We were wondering if there is anyway we can communicated via bluetooth. Is that a chat program that uses bluetooth so that we can send messages between us? Unfortunately there is no wireless service in the office.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

bluetooth is a joke. If you both have an x50 just use wifi and tinyteamtalk. http://www.bearware.dk/software.php?pageid=tinytt
me and a friend use this prog all the time and we commuicate even while usually 3 classrooms away. Bluetooth was way to slow, too short range , and too unreliable for my tastes. Make sure your in adhoc mode since your area has no router (i'm assuming) its the only way it'll connect. If you need help with that just ask :approve:

this is where adhoc comes in. As i noted before and i'm pretty sure you know, the x50mid(adv) and x50v have built in wifi. Putting them in Adhoc mode would allow you to run your own wifi network just as if you were connection to an infrastructure (router / dedicated access point) with only the two x50's. Unless i'm misinterpreting your question and your saying distance / obstructions are an issue, then bluetooth wouldn't work anyway. Try these steps to get the 2 working together.
1.Turn on your axim (duh :) )
2. go to start then settings
3. go to connections tab then Dell WLAN Utility
4. hit the setting button on the main tab
5. Hit he "Network Adapters" Tab. Change the "My Network Card Connects to" to Work (not really sure if this makes a difference for this kind of task, i know it does for sharing files n' stuff with win boxes or whatever, but the work setting has been working fine for me)
6. Hit the Dell Axim x50 WLAN Wireless Adapater line in the box of Network Adapters.
7. Press the "Use Specific IP Address" radio button and change the Ip address to 192.168.1.2, your buddy will use the address 192.168.1.3. Change the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 (default). The gateway area should be left blank. Hit ok. you will get some companing from the Ax about having to reset the adapter. Press ok. you should be at the screen with the box of available network adapters. Go to the wireless tab now.
------------------ONLY ON ONE AXIM------------------------
8. Go to "Add New..." in the list of available access points / adhoc connections.
9. Change the "Network Name" to desired. Change "Connects to" to work, and tick the "this is a device to device" connection. Go to the "NEtwork Key" Tab and change the authentication to open and encryption to disabled (ok now, before the security hard hats come in to feather and tar me, i come from a school of hicks and know it alls who don't have any means of connection to our network anyway. if you want security for this your own your own :), but no one is gonna hack your TTT conversation..unless you let them connect to your room..that might be kinda fun!) Press ok
10. You should see your new connection in the list of available networks. Just to reduce confusion and unneeded pain, tap and hold and remove all of the unneeded connections and ones that you know are dead. Yours should be the only one in the list. Also change the "Networks To Access" flyout to "Only computer to computer". Press Ok.
11. Turn off (if its on) your wifi and turn it back on. Wait for the Wireless Connection icon in the top bar..thingy (forgot what its called) to settle down , then hit the Config tab. It should be blank for the most part untill your friend connects, and then it will spring to life.
TTT is pretty self explanitory but lets make sure you and your friend get connected first before we go into that.
Good Luck (did i mention i suck at instructions?)

Hey Eddyisgreat is definitely great. We managed to get ourselves connected.

Can you advise if TTT is the only program that can be used to communicate with one another? Can we also transfer files between us? Are there any other "freeware programs" that we could try?

Thank you so much.

This is the only program we were able to get working (actually, its the only one we tried). As far as sharing files , i'm sure you could get that working but its beyond my scope of knowledge. We only share little things and for that we use infrared, for large files we transfer via SD / CF card.

Thanks so much for your advice.

Hopefully there is someone out there who may have tried another program.

What is the data transfer rate of the IR ports? How long is normal to transfer a 1 MB file. I waited 5 minutes one time and figured it wasn't actually working.
