Go to the following link and try their Total Remote application.
I used it in several PdA's and smart phones, all OK.

I'm going to give a big thumbs-down to Griffin.
I think they're unethical and downright dishonest.
I bought their software and their little extender module because it specifically promised compatibility with my device.
Well guess what?...... It didn't work.
I contacted them about it possibly being defective and I was told that they don't make defective products -- it must be a compatibility issue.
???
They offered no refund and no apology.
I kept watch of their website and they continued to list compatibility with my device for another 4 months.
They finally corrected the website but how many others got ripped off in those 4 months?
:thumbsdow

I can show you the Dell PowerPoint slides that specify CIR, if you like.

I've found that some programs don't work well with the X50's CIR, resulting in short range. What works best, and that I've gotten about 15-20 feet on, is the version of TotalRemote that's included on the Axim CD.

I believe I've also seen the suggestion that for best results turn off the power-savings on processor speed and boost to max (or at least try this as a debug option if you have problems)

I am interested in controling the remote functions of my Canon digital camera with the X50V. I don't have the original IR controller from Canon as it costs ~$70. Has anyone ever tried to control an IR capable camera with an X50 or similar PDA and software?

Whatever, if you use the software below the range works just as good as the ipaq 2200! It does not even need to be pointed right at the tv....

This program is way so much better than the remotes mentioned above. But it does come with a heavy price tag, but well worth it compared to the headaches with other software.

Another vote for WinCEsofts Remote Control II - I have a copy installed on a Siemens Simpad SL4- it's AWESOME.

I've tried the rest, and now use the best !!!!

I still think they're unethical but I can now confirm that the Griffin Total Remote IR Module works very well with the X50v.

Without the IR Module I get much greater distances using WinCEsoft's Remote Control II.

Hi, I'm new here.

I'm glad you guys are talking about this as I'm just about ready to ditch my x50v, which was purchased exclusivly to be used as a Remote. I've been using PDAWin on an IPAQ with the Electric Dog Ir extender for a couple of years now, and it great. Then the IPAQ died, so I thought I'd switch to Dell and bought the x50v.

Since then, nothing. I can't get PDAWin to work. I've tried Total Remote, and I'm now fighting to get NetRemote to work. The problem area seems to be my Harman Kardon AV amp, but to be honest, I very suspicious of the x50v as well. The send rate for IR commands seems to be very slow. With macros of 5-6 commands, it's not acceptable to have the hold the remote in line for 1-2 seconds. I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out.

I'm watching how you get on with keen interest. If I don't make some progress soon, look out for a cheap x50v on ebay!!!!

man, you're going to ditch the x50v because of its IR which some say is alright. Don't you use it for other things? Why not just but a universal remote instead and not a PPC which is really used for entertainment and PIM.

Fair enough that i don't have my x50v yet, but i think its still wrong to sell it just because of the remote. Besides consumer IR or not (though it has), it works and thats the main thing. Pehaps bluetooth remotes will come out in the future so you can switch channels when not watching the TV. I.e in the kichen or the loo. Then it will have use!

My record of selling things that I can't get to work is not good. I've got an attic full of bits of technology that I've used for a while and then forgotten. I've got a few ideas for the x50v, but it was really bought just to be the main remote for what is a fairly complex home cinema set-up. I don't use it as a PDa as I have a Blackberry linked up to my work environment.

It's still an awful lot cheaper than buying a Pronto!!

I've confined my forum activity so far to the dedicated PDA/remote sites. I knew that once I'd joined a more generic PDA group, I'd be tempted to do all sorts of other things, none of which I have time for............

In the UK (at least thats where it says you live), they are currently selling a 'one for all' mosaic which is meant to be very good for £39.95 which is around $71(for those in the US) which is rather cheap for such a high spec remote. Its at 'richer sounds'

Speaking of IR,

I sync up my axim via IR at the office and it's extremely fast!! Back in the days of my Palm it took at LEAST 5 minutes to sync. It was awful.

I've never heard of this "sped up" IR before.

Thanks Ray

Yes, I am in the Uk, and I've used those nice guys at Richer before (even if they did shut their Swindon store without notice!).

I've been down the Mosaic type remote route before, and it's OK up to a point. I'm prepared at spend the money and the time making something a bit more specific, more colourful and frankly, flash.

If you've ever used a ProntoPro with a well configured CCF you'll know what I mean. I got most of the way there with my old IPAQ, an expansion jacket and the Electric Dog extender, and it was a) pretty functional, and b) interesting to do.

I'd hope that by using the x50v I'd make the process even slicker, but it sort of falls at the first fence if I can't get the volume to go up and down.

If I can NetRemote to work, it should do everything I want, full screen config, hard button assignment, etc etc. But it seems not to like my HK amp. I may try the WinCE product over the weekend, but I'd much prefer to use something that takes CCF files.

I'm a bit of a home theater nut, and if you really want a great remote that controls everything, consider getting one of the Home Theater Master remotes such as the MX-500 and especially the MX-700 (best remote there is, IMO, and it's programmable through your PC). Or take a look at one th Pronto remotes, although they're expensive & you're entering a whole new world of pain in learning to program them. Lots of user forums to help, though. The Harmony remotes are also very popular. Very clever designs and you program them through the Harmony website.

It's tough for any PDA to adequetly substitute for one of these these remotes specificially designed to handle entertainment components.

If range is the only problem, all sorts of IR repeaters are available.
