Just a thought what about a UMD drive for the new multimedia Axim. This would allow playback of all the UMD movies that are coming out. Dell would be very wise to possibly be the first to use the UMD drive other than Sony. Along the same lines what about a return of Sony to the handheld market, with a juiced version of Windows Mobile 5. Large SVGA screen, keyboard, camera, built in harddrive, UMD-RW drive, wifi and bluetooth, usb on the go. All running on a new 1ghz xscale with lithium sulfur battery for 10+ hours of battery life. Maybe Dell could put something out like this as well.
I know this is in the wrong place but it's late and I didn't know what to do with it.

Do you know the capacity of the UMD discs?? UMD is proprietary to Sony, and the only reason why movies are coming out on UMD is because Sony is producing the movies. I think the movie companies should fight back and release movies in Flash card format (ie. CF Card). And then the UMD will probably go the way of the Beta.

Its unlikely that Sony will release a writable UMD, because they don't want people making pirate disks.
exactly (that's y software developers have to send their games to sony plants to get them manufactured, sony doesn't let the developers have access to umd plants)
the umd has storage around 1.5 gigs
movies on flash would be soooo expensive (i believe a umd costs 2 or 3 bucks to manufacture adn the movies run around 20-30 bucks) flash movies (of the same quality) would have to be on a minimum 512 mb card (which is still low quality) and that would make 'em at least 40 bucks
they could just sell the movie in a format that is encoded for pocket pc's and people could download it or copy it from a cd to there own flash card and watch it on there pda, people already do the encoding themselves and that part is the most time consuming so there may be a market for people with little time at the pc who want to watch films on there pda.
I was originally thinking of something in a folding form factor with a swivel screen like the new Sharp Zaurus. A little more than twice the size of an Axim but much smaller than a laptop.

that's more like a small tablet pc by then... still way too big -_-

A little like this thing then?
Unfortunately, the latest pictures don't seem to show a light-up keyboard. I think that just may tip the balance into me not getting one, in addition to the bulkyness and up to $1000 dollar price tag.
If they put the light-up keyboard in, then I might..
I just bought "Saw", the movie. (I have 3 other UMD movies as well). Hehe! I'll be watching that tonight on my PSP outside overlooking the beautiful NYC skyline. All you need is a blanket and you've got a party! :D

I bought one the day it came out. Love it, but not more than my Axim!

I totally love that form factor! I think it shows a lot of innovation. I think that including a keyboard on my device is necessary. I hate add-ons because they never seem to work right.
Of course, I don't wanna pay anywhere near $1K for my PDA. I can barely get the wife to approve it at $300!!
