Need help boosting wifi reception with Axim

i just bought an Axim x50v w/built-in wifi-b. hot spot reception from my office at work isn't so good, but that's where i want to have internet access (beyond the watching eyes of my corporate IT dept.). i don't have the option of setting up my own network. so it looks like my only course of action is to get an antenna of some sort. any recommendations? i've heard the linksys wcf12 gets good range, but it would be a shame to go out and buy something that is already built in to the unit. if range is really improved, it would be worth it, though.

You could setup a repeater in your cube as long as it gets the signal ok it would extend the range so your device would work... I think

Im more of a software guy so someone else on here may be able to help you more.

I would be VERY interested in this info as well... would love to be able to connect some sort of external antenna to increase the range a bit.

I wasn't talking about an external antenna. I cant remember where I saw these but it's basically a wifi router but instead of taking the Internet from a modem it takes it from another wifi router and passes it along.

I will try and find one to link

You're looking for just an "access point". Not the whole router.

Have you turned off the Power Save Mode on the WiFi dialog?

This will increase your reception. Even Auto will affect your reception.

However, disabling the Power Save Mode will decrease your battery life.

Doesn't an acces point take an already networked cable and just broadcast it? If there are ethernet cables connections in his office that would be something to considure.

Otherwise something like this...

I haven't seen an external antennae to hook up. I would recommend the repeater listed in Tancermans post. You just have to "hide" it a little so your IT dept doesn't see it. :) don't use a hollowed out stuffed animal to put it in cause people always pick those up. Maybe a fertility idol from Tahiti or something.

For some of the others, he won't want a regular access point because that would connect to his company's network. There is probably some proxy server or tracking server that his company uses to block/track users access. So using an AP external to his office would allow him to bypass his company's network.

You could also use a small external antenna. Most of the Build-Inn antennas are at 1/2 Lambda, as far as i remember. You could go to 1 Lambda. Could help. Another option is to get a non-omni antenna. Or an Antenna with a db increase. But this option is bad if the Acces Point is above or below you. You could also try turning the Axim by 90 Degree, if theres a Polarity Change. (Sounds freaky, but could really help)

Well, changing the Antenna would be an very inversive procedure. Maybe you could a repeater on your axim. If you are really intrested in it i could try and think about it.

this is along the lines of what I was wanting to do. not afraid of some soldering and I am a ham as well so I have rigged the occasional antenna..I would hate to crack the case and void the warr just to find nowhere to attach it.

Might be easier just to get the new Belkin pre-N router;
