I had an Axim X5 and it apparently leared to walk away. I'm in the market for another PDA, and I don't need wireless (WIFI) in any way.
Currently I'm looking at either the Asus A620BT (yes I know it's discontinued) and the barebones X50 and then the X50v.
My usage would be pretty simple stuff for the pda, I'm not a gamer on the PDA, that's what my behemoth on my desk is for. I doubt I'll watch movies, but I will likely get a BT GPS device (if I can find the Fortuna Clip-on GPS device that is). I think the extent of my gaming would be Bejewelled, and Missile Command.
Now the reviews I've seen for benchmarks, the A620BT destroys the Dell handhelds, not by a small margin, but by a crushing humiliating beating, at least in a few of the benches. The ones it loses in, I wont' be using the PDA for anyways.
I had a Dell before, I liked it and it fit very nicely. I can get the A620BT for $404 CDN at Tigerdirect.ca, which unfortunately I'm leaning towards now.. Althought the X50 has CF and SD capability... but I can't ignore the benchmarks that the Dell is stomped in.
Do you have a link to the benchmarks? Were they comparing the Asus to the X50? Based on your needs, the X50v would probably be overkill, but it would be interesting to see what the benchmarks are when comparing the Asus to the X50.

Asus 620BT doesn't have the VGA screen like x50v and Asus 730W. As of the performance stomp, it is likely due to x50v's quadrupled screen space. In my personal experience with x50v, I didn't notice any poor performance. I think it will fit you pretty well. With its Windows Mobile 5 upgrade in the future, it may be able to make full use of its onboard video chip, which will give a performance extra boost. Dell Canada just offered $389 for x50v not long ago. With a little more patience, you may get a x50v with even cheaper price than Asus. In addition, x50v's VGA screen will give you a big benefit if you use GPS. It displays more information with sharper pictures.
X5 uses PX250 or PX255 XScale chip, while X50 uses PX270 chip. I have heard that even PX270 312MHz is faster than PX255 400Mhz. Not to mention x50v's PX270 624MHz chip. :)
I said i found one didnt say it proved his statement :) hehe

Methinks I'm over-tired from last night. Philippe is correct on the X5 model. I found one comparing it to the X30 though :) I think my eyes put a 0v in there. Since this is the case, byebye Asus!! I'll take a barebones X50 with SD/CF support for cheaper and a slightly faster processor too. Or should I just get the x30 w/bt :)... or wait until summer's over and school sales are back in? Sigh... months without a PDA... OH THE HORROR!!

It is PXA not PX. If you state facts and figures about CPUs, KNOW what you are referring too...

we cool?
Thanks for pointing it out. You are right. For some reason, my brain prefers PX and always forgets the extra A. I guess it has some memory shortage issue. ;)

Try dropping the first two digits in any four digit year that you're remembering. It worked 30 years ago... why can't it work now?
I sold mine earlier, on Ebay, I can't say too much good
about the Asus, The screen was good, nice and clear, loaded
progs, and ran them well, never found a decent larger battery
for one though, battery life was horrible, Have you considered
who is going to fix it when it breaks, I think Asus is dropping
its customer support for it as well, like Toshiba did with
e755, I can't see what you would gain over the faster, smaller
and more battery friendly x50....anyway thats my input, have
a better day
I think the most important thing for buying a PDA right now is to see if it will have the Windows Mobile 5 upgrade. I think it's a bit useless to spend so much money on a PDA that will not run the most recent OS.
