I don't understand the problems everyone has with direct sun. Just the other day I sat outside reading in very bright sun and had no problems reading the screen. Since the screen reflects ambient light, trying to shade it is self-defeating, and cranking the brightness up to maximum just burns power if you're not in a car or other shaded environment. The screen washes out a bit in sunlight, so be sure to use high contrast colors.

I have the x50v, and have to agree that it works very well when you let the direct sunlight shine on it. But, that is actually the trick, direct sunlight. Don't turn it away so the direct sunlight is not hitting the screen. Try it.
