Dell Axim x50 in sunlight?

Hey,

I plan on using the Axim outdoors a lot of the time. I was wondering will I be able to use the Dell Axim x50 in the sun without the VGA screen? Since I'm using it outside should I use the x50v? I really want to save as much money as possible here but I just need to know about the performance in the sun.

Thanks

Its not too incredibly bright when looked at in sunlight, but I use it outdoors in sunny florida all the time without many problems...

Not a good experience at all. Same with my Ipaq 4155.
I mean, really, if you are planing on using it in broad sunlight, its not going to look as good...

im not saying you wont see anything, but visibility will be greatly reduced by about 80% less than usual.

Im sure someone will have a better explination as to why, but for now think of it this way: ...watching tv in a bright lit room at around 5pm when the sun hits the TV screen, you can see only silhouettes and motion going on tv. no fine detail.

I don't know how much of an explanation it is, but the X50 uses a transflective display, which means it's only partially reflective, and partly transmissive, in order to allow the backlight to shine through the display. A fully reflective display would be brighter in sunlight but it wouldn't work with a backlight.

if you want to go cheap, you might be able to get a flip top case and use it as a shade. don't really know, cause i've never really used one, but its an idea.

with the x50v, i sometimes have slight problems looking at it in direct sunlight even with it all the way up. just have to tilt move it around a little bit.

Really, the X50v can be almost unusable in direct unclouded sunlight. I have sat outside with it on a partially cloudy day and had success, but, it isn't impressive. Indoors it is great, but, if I required outdoor usage in my Pocket PC I would research it more thoroughly.

I've got a Boxwave anti-glare screen protector and I can use my X50v in direct sunlight, albeit the screen is a little harder to see but it is very useable. The protector cost me like $11USD on www.AximCases.com. Great product but its really hard ot install getting no dust or finger prints caught under it.

Well I have heard that there are many great screen protectors available that can minimize glare with Anti-light or Anti-glare,

Some of the better branded ones that I've read about include Brando and Boxwave
http://shop.brando.com.hk/screenprotector.php
http://www.boxwave.com/products/clea...m-x50v_446.htm

usually people choose between antiglare or crystal screen protectors, one works better in the sun but not the picture is not as sharp while the other has a sharp clear screen that's a bit more reflective

The only time I use my X50v outside is in my car for GPS. I have the anti-glare Brando protector, but I often struggle to see the screen, particularly if the colours are on the dark or drab side (i.e., low contrast colours). If I wear sunglasses, it's even worse. Of course, my eyes may be to blame, but the point is that the display is not that great in sunlight.

I don't understand the problems everyone has with direct sun. Just the other day I sat outside reading in very bright sun and had no problems reading the screen. Since the screen reflects ambient light, trying to shade it is self-defeating, and cranking the brightness up to maximum just burns power if you're not in a car or other shaded environment. The screen washes out a bit in sunlight, so be sure to use high contrast colors.

I have to agree with Adama I just tried outside, and yes it's very usable, the only problem I could find was getting the wong angle and ending with the sun in my face, other than that I would say it's perfectly usable

I use my x50v outdoors often. I had a very hard time trying to see the screen while shading it, or turning it away from the sun. Once I learned to angle it so that the sunlight took advantage of the reflective properties of the screen I have found it to be just fine for most uses. I wouldn't use betaplayer to watch a movie in direct sunlight, but productivitie apps and most games are just fine.

WHen I was in Vegas I was having a problem on my old X5 in bright sunlight while using the GPS in the car. Made a little sunshield/hood for it out of an old manila folder and it worked pretty well. I haven't done anything like that to the X50v though. I think the screen is better in the sunlight than the X5's.
