No partnership prompt = no first sync

Hi, new to the PPC world and especially active sync.
Setting up my computer and axim for their first sync and I don't get a partnership prompt. AS automatically tries to connect w/o setting up a partnership. I've re-installed/restarted/soft and hard re-setted, all to no avail. I'm using Dell's usb cradle. AS is "connecting" and the green ball is spinning but nothing is happening. MS outlook 2002 is installed.

TIA for your help.

Did you install activesync to your computer before you hooked up your cradle to USB for the first time?

Yes, I believe I installed AS first, then hooked up the cradle to USB. However, it was pretty late when I was doing this. Something tells me that I may have gotten the order wrong. If so, is this fixable?

Thank you

Thats a toughy. I have never read a post explaining the same situation you just did. You mentioned you uninstalled/reinstalled hard reset etc... If I were in your situation, I would first disconnect your cradle from the USB port and uninstall activesync. I would also HARD reset the AXIM. Then I would reinstall ActiveSync and Outlook. Finally, I would reconnect the Axim by putting it in the cradle, and see if it prompts you to establish a partnership. If this doesn't work, or you have already tried this? Well, maybe someone else can help you.

Here's an update:
I was able to install and sync with my Windows ME machine perfectly. The machine I'm having problems with is running Windows XP Pro, SP2. Could it be a XP problem?

Update:
Got the AXIM to sync with my XP machine. I used a utility called Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2005 and removed AS. Also, uninstalled Symantec's live update (I use AVG anyway) and Zone Alarm.

Reistalled AS 3.8 and VOILA! We got sync.

Thanks for everyone's help.
