Many of the free players (for MP3) have equalizers built in that include a preamp slider. If you pull that preamp slider down a bit you might find a lower level that you are comfortable with.

I didnt think the x50v was loud enough so I purchased a set of ear buds that had a volume slider built into them (SENNHEISER MX500 STEREO EAR HEADPHONES). Can go really loud or really soft. Only $11.99 on ebay and sound great better than any other earbuds I have had.
