I listen to audiobooks in bed at night with earbuds for comfort and to allow the wife to sleep in peace.
The problem is the x50v volume goes up an down in fixed steps (eg mort player).
The lowest setting is too loud for me when listening at night in perfect silence. WhenI try to drop volume lower the next stop is mute.
Do i need headphones with a volume control or is there another way around this?
You can also try using a media player with a sound system that's detached from the system volume. Try using GSPlayer (it's free and good quality, but looks like crap) or PocketPlayer (non-free, but my overall favourite media player for sound). You can also try betaplayer, though that's more designed to play back videos.
You might have to enable the detached sound control in the programs I mentioned...pretty sure about pocketplayer, not sure with gsplayer.
Thanks for the help. Hopefully x50 mix works with mort player because I need an audiobook player with good fast forward and rewind (3hr long files!) and has resume from last position (its a pain to scan for my postion again and again)
well i had a similar problem myself w/ betaplayer, so i went into the options to change the equalizer, i made everything as low as possible, hope this helps =D
If you see that doesn't help you, you can purchase something like THIS
I also recommend the Panasonic RPHV 162 Earbuds from your local big box electronic store. Only $10 CAD and has the volume control built in. It's probably cheaper in the states.
I use GSPlayer which even though may be unlinked from the main volume control, is still the same.. level 7 and below is mute (don't know why....) and level 8 is blasting loud - so much so that I need to take my earbud partially out of my ear!
I've played with gain controls in some of the programs and it does help... not sure why the volume controls are soooo touchy though.. turning the volume up to 10 is like turning your stereo to full blast.. who listens to music this loud!?!?
X50v mix didnt work with mort player. (Hope I set it right)
Can anyone confirm if they can get it to work.
Otherwise does anyone know of a fix for this.
Dont want to buy a separate headphone with vol control unless I have to.

I'm in a similar situtation. I can't seem to set the volume of the headphone jack any lower before it goes MUTE.
The in-line headphone volume control thing works great. Mine has a slider thing on it (actually, one for left, one for right) so I can listen to audiobooks and adjust the volume when it gets kind of loud.
I always use headphones with a volume control.. so i can turn it down quickly if someone wants to talk to me

I have a set of Sennheiser MX500 earbuds. Very comfortable (I have slightly larger than average size ears), execellent sound quality for the price (bass is really good for just standard earbuds). and best of all, the volume control is extremely discrete. Just a little box about an inch long and not much thicker than the cable itself. You can pick it up from amazon for $15, don't think any brick & mortar stores have them in stock anymore, as there is a newer model (MX550) out, but they somehow lessened the quality of the good bass of the 500's, so IMHO, the 500 is a better buy. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...&s=pc&n=507846
