I use a Shuttle XPC Cube. The USB ports are constantly powered, even when the machine is turned off. I never realised you guys had this problem. Maybe there is a BIOS setting to change this?
Since the cradle doesn't rely on USB to charge the unit, there's no real reason to have the USB plugged in unless you need to constantly synchronize. As I have mine set up at home, I have USB ports on the front of my computer case and the USB cable strung up to there and I only plug it in when I want to sync or install software, then unplug it when it's finished. Pretty simple.
Why would this be a problem? Just set the Brightness setting to turn off after a few minutes while Plluged In and set the Power setting to turn off after a few minutes while Plugged In. It turnes on, syncs, and after a few minutes turns off.

be nice if the cradle had an unplugable usb sync cable, just like the power cable on the back :approve:

I found it to be a problem if gaming. If I took the Axim off the cradle to use it between levels (or whatever), then put it back on, it triggered activesync, disrupting the screen with the background pop-up. So, like the post above, I only have the USB plugged in when syncing at the desktop. Once done, take it out, sorted.
I should unplug my USB when not actually synching too... sometimes it's a pain in the rump because when that synch box comes up I feel compelled to let it go through its paces even though I don't need to
besides, wasn't there an issue about it killing USB ports??
When I travel, I just take my usb sync cable without the adaptor. In order to charge x50v, I need to turn it off. Everytime my laptop comes alive from power saving, my axim turns on and stop charging it. Yeah, it's very annoying. I hate packing the power adaptor while I can still charge with only this sync cable.
The Dell will wake up every now and then (I think it's 15 mins) and then go to sleep again (after 5 mins, I think). So the it will stop charging whether your laptop comes alive or not.
If it comes alive and does not establish an Activesync session with your laptop, then it will go back to sleep. If Activesync is running, then it will establish a session and the PDA will not go back to sleep. This is when your PDA will start draining the battery.
So you manually terminate Activesync before you go to sleep and your PDA will continue charge (stopping intermitently) until the next moring. You can "kill" Activesync by calling up the Task Manager and kill the process (mentioned below).
I've found a utility that can kill a process called pskill. This can kill the Activesync process by coding in a batch file:
pskill wcescomm.exe
pskill wcesmgr.exe
I then use the Windows scheduler to kill Activesync close to about mid-night and repeatitively (may be every 15 mins, in case I'm still working and need to start Activesync again) until the next morning.
I later read there is an utility to kill Activesync but I don't remember what it is.

Maybe you guys misunderstood my earlier post. I'll explain in more detail. I leave my X50v on the cradle, connected to my PC via USB, and on charge at the mains almost always. Whenever I switch my PC on, my Axim DOESN'T suddenly spring into life.
I noticed when I left an external hard drive plugged in one day, that when I shutdown the PC, the hard disk stayed on. Hence constant powered USB.
Like I said, I use a Shuttle XPC case. Maybe there is a setting in the BIOS to keep USB powered, thus avoiding your Axim waking up at the same time as your PC.
